After a saga of back-and-forth accusations, verbal attacks, and threats of lawsuits, you shouldn’t be surprised if Ryan Garcia and Devin Haney run it back next year. Despite already going 12 rounds against each other, their rivalry is only reaching a zenith, with a burning desire inside ‘KingRy’ to prove his worth and shock the world, again. But that’s not it. He wants to replicate an iconic scene from a 1985 blockbuster. So, what exactly are his intentions?

While Garcia, 25, pulled off an upset against Haney, 25, he found himself embroiled in the controversy of PED abuse. Weeks of pleadings went to dust as the NYSAC handed him a year-long ban, a fine of $10k, and a forfeiture of his guaranteed $1.1 million fight purse. It wasn’t the financial penalty that affected him, but rather the constant push for further litigation by the WBC champion. What’s more? Haney, at 31-0, after restoring his undefeated record, has expressed how the fight with Garcia affected him not only financially but also emotionally. Interestingly, to restore his pride and repair his public image, ‘The Dream’ had already specified his desire for a rematch. However, if Garcia were to be believed, he would go full Ivan Drago on the champ.

Reacting to the comments of Haney’s legal charges, Garcia laid out his plan to cause his childhood foe “brain damage”. In addition, the 24-1 record holder even predicted a grim fate for Haney, as he declared on his X handle, “I gave him brain damage, if there is a rematch mark my works you’d actually die In the ring. Not saying I want that to happen. But like the Russian in Rocky 4 said “If he DIES HE DIES”.

Where exactly is the angst from Haney coming from? Since dropping the fight to Garcia and the visuals of him lying on the canvas, helpless, made waves on the internet, fans and promoters have been skeptical of the super lightweight champion’s ability to survive on top and sell out arenas. When you factor in his recent purse bid for the mandatory defense against Sandor Martin, you’ll realize that very few were ready to pin their hopes on the San Francisco native. The financial loss is mounting up as the saga drags on, and if Eddie Hearn is to be believed, his former client has already lost $1.1 million.

Eddie Hearn calls out the discrepancy in Ryan Garcia’s penalty

When the NYSAC asked Garcia to relinquish his guaranteed fight purse of $1.1 million, do you know who pocketed it? It was not Haney, but Golden Boy Promotions. While the British promoter lauded the overturn of the fight’s decision to no-contest, he couldn’t find any logic in an unexpected windfall of $1.1 million on Golden Boy Promotions. He told Boxing News, “$1.1 million to Golden Boy, which is just unbelievable… Can we change it?! Devin should be getting that money.”

Whatever may be the case, Haney needs the rematch with Garcia, more than his rival does. Should he wait for a year for the rematch? He is willing to do it. Will it be worth it? At least the buzz around the rematch will generate him a hefty payout. Is he getting it anywhere? It doesn’t seem so. And standing across from him in the squared circle would be an angry Garcia.
