It was all about power and ring generalship. That’s how you can describe the encounter between Isaac Cruz and Jose Valenzuela. The fight had it all, a champion’s onslaught and a late resurgence for the challenger, almost reaching the gold and then grabbing it by force. In the contest between Cruz’s power and Valenzuela’s boxing, it was the latter that came out on top.
Valenzuela won the fight as it went the distance, relying on his tall and lanky frame and keeping ‘Pitbull’ on the bay with his jabs. ‘El Rayo’ swept the judges’ scorecard and bagged the WBA super lightweight title with a well-executed game plan.

Typical of him, Cruz came with all guns blazing into the first round, pushing Valenzuela on his back foot. He was walking down and putting forward pressure once he became comfortable. He also didn’t allow Valenzuela to settle down, as whenever the challenger caught with an uppercut, he would lead a charge and swamp him with punches. The challenger had his moments, but whenever he initiated exchanges, he found himself on the receiving end of stingy counters. While he tried to use his jabs and distance, Cruz was able to cut short the distance, come inside, and land some heavy blows.
However, the momentum slowly shifted in the fifth round, as Valenzuela’s uppercuts and jabs found timing. He was also active with his combinations and did not stay in the same spot. The big moment came in round 6, when he had Cruz on wobbly legs due to his uppercut. While Cruz was dominating the power punches in short intervals, Valenzuela was the better boxer throughout the three minutes.
