Will Errol Spence Jr. vs. Sebastian Fundora be the bloodiest fight of the decade?

Errol Spence Jr. is going to come back with a vengeance. In his last fight against Terence Crawford, the former unified welterweight champion was battered by his opponent, eventually being stopped in the ninth round. Now, after an eighteen-month layoff, he is reportedly going to face Sebastian Fundora, the unified light-middleweight champion, at Cowboy Stadium in Arlington, Texas, at 154 lbs weight limit. Interestingly, it must be pointed out that several boxing commentators have urged Spence Jr. to hang his gloves after his lackluster performance against Crawford. The injuries Spence Jr. has incurred over the years don’t help either.

The reality is that Errol Spence Jr. doesn’t need to be back in the ring. You saw him; you heard the slurring of his words. I know it was in the immediate aftermath of the beatdown, but my goodness. We know what we saw,”  Stephen A Smith said on his YouTube channel following Spence Jr.’s loss to the two-time undisputed champion.

Seconding Stephen A. Smith’s opinion is boxing insider Rick Glaser who is shocked by the fight announcement. For him, the fight is a foregone conclusion, and he sees only one clear winner — Fundora. According to Glaser, Spence Jr. will be “destroyed” by Fundora, due to the compounding effect of his prolonged layoff, the beating he suffered in the Terence Crawford fight, and his drinking problem.

“ErrolSpence is returning in January vs Jr MiddleWorld Champ #SebastianFundora, & #Spence will get destroyed by #Fundora, total destruction. By fight time, it’ll be 18 months of inactivity, drinking, & all after the beating ##TerenceCrawford put on #Spence. That one is going to be ultra ugly,” Glaser wrote on X.

Many in the boxing community would argue that Errol Spence Jr. wasn’t at his best in the battle to become the undisputed welterweight champion last year. He came into the showdown, still reeling from the injuries he suffered from three horrible car accidents. Furthermore, he fought ‘Bud’ with a detached retina which he picked up two and a half years ago in training that forced his fight with Manny Pacquiao to be called off in 2021.

Thus, the upcoming match would be a litmus test for the 34-year-old Spence Jr. to see whether he can compete for world titles anymore. Even before his matchup with Terence Crawford, Spence Jr. fought only twice between 2020-22 due to a high-speed Ferrari crash in October of 2019 that saw him get ejected from his vehicle and suffer serious injuries.

Glaser had a message for all those boxing fans who feel Errol Spence Jr. has much more left in his gas tank. “To the doubters you will see that Spence is shot to pieces when he faces #SebastianFundora,” said Glaser. Elaborating on why Errol Spence will struggle against Fundora, he stated that there were a lot of tell-tale signs that showed that the fighter was on his last leg in his fight against ‘Bud.’

“There are tell tale signs of being a shot fighter, slowed reflexes, slurred speech, legs are gone including not being able to privet in the ring like prior, & punch resistance being down,” he wrote on X.

Furthermore, Glaser mockingly pointed out that Spence’s fight against Fundora should be billed as “One Last Money Grab,” as he doesn’t see Spence recovering from the beatdown he will be receiving in his upcoming fight.

However, if Spence defeats Fundora, a lot of opportunities will open up as there are a lot of other excellent fights he can make at 154 lbs. Moreover, a rematch with Crawford could also be on the cards.
