Our beloved boxing legend Mike Tyson did not have the easiest of childhoods and grew up around violence and poverty. This naturally made the former heavyweight champion susceptible to a life of crime which he did turn to during his early teenage years. ‘Iron’ Mike has detailed many incidents where he got into altercations with the law and ended up in juvenile detention centers.

However, these centers would prove to be the silver lining in Tyson’s life as he was introduced to boxing in these centers. Eventually, he would go on to meet legendary coach Cus D’ Amato who made Tyson one of the most fearsome boxers on the planet under his tutelage. Despite this, the former champ was lost without a cause before he found boxing.

In his book The Undisputed Truth, Tyson claimed that he made rounds of multiple homes but would not last in any. He also stated that he would tell his mother to give him marijuana while he was in these homes as she was the “facilitator”.

Since I was now in the system the authorities decided to send me to group homes to get straightened out. They would take a bunch of kids who were down, abused, bad, psycho kids and throw them together in some home where the government paid people to take us in. The whole thing was a hustle. I would never last more than three days. I’d just run away. One time, I was in a group home in Brentwood, Long Island. I called home and b*tched and moaned to my mother that I didn’t have any weed there, so she made Rodney buy me some and deliver it to me. She was always a facilitator.” he wrote.

Tyson then revealed that he was sent to Staten Island. However, this would turn out to give Tyson one of the most frightening experiences of his life which he only realized later on.

Tyson was almost thrown off a boat by a stranger

In the next paragraph, Tyson revealed that he was sent to Mount Loretto, Staten Island. This meant that he could now rob the Staten Island Ferry which he and his friends often did. However, one time they ran into a person who got the idea that he was robbed and even confronted Tyson and his friends. Despite beating his friend they were able to still keep the money which was a win for them but in hindsight, Tyson revealed that his life could have ended that day.

“He started beating on everyone around him, the whole ferry had to JP on the motherf***er. My friend was the one who jostled him. and he kicked my friend in the a*s but he didn’t know he had gotten the perpetrator. We got off the boat and were all laughing because we got the money. My friend was laughing through his tears. That guy would have been thrown off the boat if he knew we had his money. I get scared now by thinking about the life I used to live back then. Oh god, he would have killed us, he was that fuc**g fierce,” Tyson added.
