When Gervonta Davis leaves the MGM Grand Garden Arena this Saturday after dismantling Frank Martin, he will already know the name he will fight next. After years of demands, boxing fans will finally have their say as they might witness the highly skilled Vasyl Lomachenko taking on the power puncher ‘Tank’. However, it all hinges on the fight’s outcome on June 15. But if that goes without hiccups, as predicted by PBC and Top Rank, fans will have the much-awaited fight soon.
The contest between Davis, 29, and Lomachenko, 36, is a classical but mouthwatering contest of power and skills. Top Rank’s Bob Arum has long favored a unification fight in the lightweight division and is ready to push the Ukrainian champion for it. He admitted to the talks between him and the PBC, under whose banner Davis fights. The American promoter told Boxing News, “The truth is we have been talking to the PBC people all along.”
However, negotiations have been paused until Davis, at 28-0, brushes aside Martin, 18-0, and retains the gold. And for both camps, they will pick up right where they left off. Arum continued, “So, we’ll absolutely resume conversations next week after this fight, assuming Tank is successful on Saturday. But again, it won’t be the start of negotiations. We have been talking. Carl Moretti has been talking with Luis Decubas or a couple of weeks now about that fight.”

But when will the two champions at 135 cross paths? As Davis might need some time off to recover and then set up an extensive fight camp, the same is true for Lomachenko, who is years removed from his prime. A possible timeline would have been towards the year’s end, which is what Arum is also targeting. The 92-year-old added, “Hopefully, we’ll put it together expeditiously for some time in November.”
But can you expect the Baltimore native to retain his championship after coming off a 14-month layoff? Will the ring rust restrict and limit his movements and confidence? It doesn’t seem so.

Fearless Gervonta Davis is ready to conquer Frank Martin
The WBA champion appeared toned and with a lighter frame when he showcased his body at the weigh-ins. Making the weight easily, Davis reiterated his desire to flatline his undefeated opponent. Despite fighting last April against Ryan Garcia, the champion appeared confident as he declared, “I’m a dog.”
Davis also didn’t cave into the idea of the challenger coming on top. He announced with almost ominous determination, “I’m coming out on top tomorrow night. I don’t care who he is.” It remains to be seen how the boxing fans react to the match, which has come their way a little late.
