Is Gervonta Davis the same fighter he was 2 years ago? Probably not. But he still has miles to go before he hangs up his gloves for good. However, his March 1 fight against Lamont Roach Jr. did show some holes in his game. Maybe it was the hair grease? Or maybe it was just one of those off nights. Regardless, since the controversial majority decision draw, people have been coming out of the woodwork to question his durability in the sport. One of them happens to be Ryan Garcia’s father.

Coach Henry Garcia, who has been a trainer for a long time, recently gave his two cents about the Tank-Roach controversy a few days ago. He spoke to Fight Hub TV on the sidelines of the New York press conference for the May 2 Fatal Fury event in New York, which will be headlined by his son Ryan Garcia. And what did he say?

Not the same Gervonta Davis who fought Ryan Garcia?

“His age is catching up to him. The legs aren’t there as they used to be,” Henry Garcia replied when asked about Tank Davis’ recent performance against Lamont Roach Jr. in comparison to the one against his son. Whether Tank’s legs are gone (as Garcia claims) or not, Ryan Garcia’s father is a person who can definitely give his opinion on the subject. It was only two years ago that Gervonta Davis brutally knocked out his son in the seventh round of their Las Vegas fight. Even though Tank has aged since then, it would be absurd to claim that he has aged so much in two years that his legs are no longer the same. But hey, it’s a free world. However, Garcia Sr. went a step further.

“He switched his trainer, which could be another factor,” Garcia Sr. posited. The decision to switch trainers this time around raised eyebrows, as Calvin Ford typically leads the corner alongside Kenny Ellis. However, for the fight against Roach, Barry Hunter took up the mantle.

Naturally, the switch sparked plenty of speculation, but Calvin Ford was quick to dismiss any notion of a rift. During fight week, he clarified that due to a change in Gervonta Davis’ training location and him being busy with amateurs in his gym, Barry Hunter had to take over, but the plan was very much the same.

Has Gervonta Davis lost his edge, or is he still the beast he once was?

Despite the explanation, many, including Henry Garcia, speculated that the change in camp may have contributed to the unfavorable outcome. Maybe having Calvin Ford back in his role as Tank’s primary coach can help yield a different outcome next time, according to Garcia Sr. However, regarding the outcome of the first fight, the veteran trainer asserted, “There’s no way you can say that Tank won. There’s no way.” With the debate about the outcome still raging, the only way to silence the chatter is for Gervonta Davis to dismantle Roach in a rematch. So when will that happen?

Two more months to go!

So, it looks like “The Gervonta Davis vs. Lamont Roach rematch will likely happen in June.” Boxing Kingdom tweeted about it after Michael Woods (who’s worked with ESPN and The Ring) shared the information on X. The big question now? Where’s it gonna happen?

Woods brought up Las Vegas as an obvious choice since it’s the money-making capital for boxing. “Now: is it a #LasVegas fight?” he asked. But since the first fight sold out in New York, and with both fighters being from the East Coast, he thinks maybe they should keep it there. Makes sense, right? However, it’s mostly up to Gervonta Davis and his team to decide when and where he wants the fight. But Lamont Roach expects it to happen sooner rather than later.

Now, if the WBA Junior Lightweight Champion wants the revenge, he better be ready for a whole different Tank this time around. Let’s be real. The Baltimore native isn’t the kind of guy to take a draw lightly. He’s probably ready to remind everyone why he’s one of the most feared fighters in the division and why he is still the same fighter he was two years ago. Do you think Lamont Roach can hunt down the beast this time?
