Gervonta Davis has once proved why he is one of the ‘faces of boxing’. The eighth-round KO of Frank Martin might have shut down the murmurs at the skeptics’ corner. Some, it seems, reserved doubts about his performance after an absence of over a year. There are no signs that ‘Tank’ would make a move to the division above. Hence, it’s quite possible that he might remain at 135 pounds, proceed with title unification, and then go for the undisputed title as the final goal. The remaining three champions in the lightweight division are Vasyl Lomachenko, Shakur Stevenson, and Denys Berinchyk.

In this lot, there’s a name that has been increasingly making the rounds as the potential line-up against Gervonta Davis. It’s none other than the two-time Olympic gold medalist and boxing technician par excellence, Vasyl Lomachenko. The fight has yet to be finalized. However, that hasn’t prevented fans and followers from speculating on the turnout of the big fight. Will ‘Loma’ prove just another number who will eventually fail in front of ‘Tank’s relentless attack? Or might the Ukrainian champion prove himself an exception and close his outstanding career with a memorable win? Perhaps in these situations, the best person would be the one who has been in the ring with either of the two champions and knows them inside out to share a fair insight. FightHype thus got the opportunity to catch up with Gervonta Davis’ sparring partner, Robert Meriwether III.

So they’re talking about Gervonta versus Lomachenko. I mean, obviously, you’ve been in the ring with Tank. Is Lomachenko a tougher fight?” The reporter asked the 6-0 super featherweight prospect. The young boxer from ‘The Greatest’ Muhammad Ali‘s hometown, Louisville, Kentucky, admitted that Vasyl Lomachenko is a tough boxer.

Perhaps he might be a way up high in toughness that many of the boxers ‘Tank’ faced in the past, Meriwether surmised. But come whatsoever, he would still pick Gervonta Davis as his pick for the win. Why? “I mean there there’s a lot of things that you still haven’t seen like, suggested Robert Meriwether.

He further added, “He (Gervonta Davis) has the IQ like people don’t see that he has IQ in the ring; it’s not; it’s not just a power a power punch and he’s not going to go out there and just throw everything; he’s not; it’s not like that; he sets up his shots and he knows when to throw where to throw it, and he’s quick; he’s fast.

Hence, the Baltimorean will emerge as the winner. but it seems the 19-year-old upcoming star still has his doubts. Because, according to him, unlike the Frank Martin fight, the clash with Lomachenko might go a bit further than usual. More so, as most fans are aware, Davis is a well-known slow starter. so might go a bit easy during the first few rounds. But the problem is that Meriwether explained that ‘The Matrix’ also fights in a similar manner!

So we’ll see when it comes up,” he concluded. Undoubtedly, the Davis-Loma line-up has the potential for a big payday. To some, it might even remind them of the 1982 epic war between Aaron ‘The Eagle’ Pryor and the great Alexis Arguello.

If there’s one thing over which Gervonta Davis has a stamp of approval, it would be power. We’re talking about a man who has won nearly 93% of his fights by sending his opponents to the dream land. As against him, you have a 36-year-old veteran who may have scored only 12 knockouts in his professional career but enjoys a well-earned reputation for outsmarting most, if not all. The foxy Ukrainian might have better resumes in terms of an amateur career. But we’re talking about the big, glitzy lights and the millions of dollars purse.

Explaining the difference, Stephen A. Smith recently said, “Lomachenko is a brilliant, brilliant tactician, and a brilliant boxer footwork is magnificent, very experienced, etc. etc. My issue with Lomachenko is that is that I don’t know if Lomachenko has the power to stop Gervonta Davis, which means that we’d basically be watching the fight to see if he will outbox Gervonta or if he’ll survive.

So basically, Loma might be successful in taking ‘Tank’ to the distance by not falling into his traps by not falling on the ropes. But for how long? After all, he is not the Lomachenko of the prime days. Running around the ring, there are chances he may gas out eventually. So the Olympic medalist will have to sit with his team and work.
