Fans adore Gervonta Davis for multiple reasons outside the ring, but inside the ring, it’s only one—his ability to put on a show and churn out knockouts. So, when he made a return to the squared circle this June against Frank Martin, he did what he does best. Since then, there have been reports of the Baltimorean’s return to fight again this year, and Stephen Espinoza has a crucial update.

A November timeline for ‘Tank’ is being floated, but there are doubts about his opponents. While a fight with Shakur Stevenson is in plans for 2025, no top name is available to entertain Davis. Ricky Funez cleared some air on the screening process and disclosed, “It’ll be in November… It’s going to be against one of Robert Garcia’s fighters.” However, there is no clarity on the probable suitor.

Espinoza, 54, also shed light on limited options for Davis, at 30-0, who was running out of options at 135. He told Boxing News, “I think the options for a top-tier fight for him are relatively limited, you know, as other fighters have either not been able to make deals or have taken other fights. Then things start to get more and more narrow.”

But the former Showtime Boxing president delighted the boxing fans by disclosing that a fight announcement was mere weeks away. “I think we’ll have an announcement within the next, uh, certainly within the next couple [of] weeks. I know Tank is adamant about fighting this year,” he revealed. Espinoza then admitted whom he wanted the WBA lightweight champion to trade punches with next.

Stephen Espinoza adds to the rumors

One name that many have speculated for Davis’ 2024 return was Jose Valenzuela. ‘El Rayo’ attracted eyeballs with his splendid win against Isaac Cruz and clinched the WBA super lightweight title. So, Espinoza fanning the rumors, added, “Personally, I like the Valenzuela fight a lot, and there’s [a] reason for it. Like coming off of that really signature win for Rayo against Pitbull. So I think, you know, that’s a possibility.”

Espinoza also admitted that there were other names on the list and those were going through the screening process. “There are certainly others. But I do think that it won’t be too long before we have a Tank announcement,” he declared.

The chances of Valenzuela taking the Davis fight are low because he has stressed his desire to take a break and spend time with his family. Then there are the concerns of the weight class, as he is the WBA champion at 140 and a fight with Davis would be at 135. It seems a far-fetched possibility of him draining himself to go down to 135 and fight a knockout artist while being in bad shape.
