Gervonta Davis, already the WBA junior lightweight and lightweight champion, has also sighted the super lightweight belt in his upcoming journey. After knocking out Leo Santa Cruz in October, several names came up for ‘Tank’ as his possible options.
That said, WBC Interim lightweight champion, Ryan Garcia, also called him out. However, Davis is set to focus on the WBA radar as he will reportedly fight the 140 lbs titleholder, Mario Barrios, next.
Mike Coppinger broke the news from his social media, revealing it as the next official fight for ‘Tank’. However, Gervonta Davis and Mario Barrios are still to claim it from their end.

Davis will be moving up by two weight classes, as he faced Leo Santa Cruz at 130 lbs. However, as he is a natural 135 pounder, shifting to 140 might not be a harsh task. Moreover, a win will turn him into a three-weight champion, and such a legacy would clearly allure a young prodigy like him.

But, a fight against Barrios might not be a walk in the park. Akin to ‘Tank’, ‘El Azteca’ is also an undefeated knockout artist So, Davis will step against someone with similar status and it will risk it all.
Gervonta Davis vs Mario Barrios- Preview of the fight
The 5’10” Mario Barrios is an orthodox boxer, with sheer sharp movement and power. Still fresh from his KO over Ryan Karl in October, Barrios is a looming champion of the current super lightweight division. But, Davis will seemingly be his toughest rival to date and can be the first man to hand him a defeat.
Although Barrios will have his fair chances on the corner, it would still demand a lot more to outpoint Gervonta Davis. Especially if he appears in his best form.

Davis would also challenge Barrios stylistically and can take him to the final bell. The Baltimore native is a southpaw and has intense power in his shots. He is a stacked power puncher and needs just one perfectly timed shot to bag the win. So, a fight against Barrios would clearly be intense.
However, ‘Tank’ would relish some advantages. Furthermore, being a two-weight champion, he has the right mindset to accept new challenges. Nevertheless, only an in-ring collision can provide all the answers as to whether Davis is ready to conquer his third weight class this early into his career.
