Is Gervonta Davis more interested in protecting his record than proving he's the best in boxing?

WBA lightweight champion Gervonta Davis is slated to lock horns with WBA super featherweight champion Lamont Roach on 14th December in Houston, Texas. However, the Baltimore native is causing a buzz for something else—the soon-to-turn 30-year-old seems to have ripped into a fan after the latter commented about Davis’ resume.

Davis, of course, currently has 30 fights and 30 wins under his belt. However, many criticize the undefeated boxer for cherry-picking his opponents and taking calculated risks only when necessary. Others go as far as to suggest that his entire record is heavily padded, with opponents either way past their prime or not at the same level.

Let’s take his upcoming bout for example—why fight someone from a lower weight class when Shakur Stevenson has been calling him out for some time now? Davis is also accused of avoiding a fight against former undisputed lightweight champion Devin Haney. Even when he does fight the best like Ryan Garcia, the latter was drained of energy due to a rehydration clause in their contract.

From the outside looking in, Davis’ approach to boxing has been purely one of making the most money while taking minimum risk. A fan on X said something in a similar vein, which seems to have caused Davis to erupt with some harsh words. “Gervonta Tank Davis will turn 30 in about two weeks and the mf has the resume of a child,” the fan wrote.

Responding to this, Davis hit back writing, “Now let’s talk about how you finish school and all that for you to work for someone and now they dictate when you wake up and go to sleep..lol I’ll pick my life over ya life any day..loser.” Despite Davis’ unparalleled success, the fan’s comment hurt him on some level for him to respond to the tweet.

Regardless, this isn’t the only social media beef ‘Tank’ has been in recent times.

The ‘Face of Boxing’ caused a stir by calling undisputed light heavyweight champion Artur Beterbiev an ‘a**’ on social media. This came after Beterbiev defeated former WBA light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol in a closely contested fight in Riyadh earlier this month. You see, everything started with Beterbiev’s trainer, John Scully.

While appearing in an interview with StreetStarNorbe Scully, who was a title contender himself in the past, shared his thoughts on whether Davis would make it on the Hall of Fame if he retired today. “Probably in this era… but for me, the Hall of Fame has always been the elite of the elites,” Scully said.

He referenced legendary names in the sport like Sugar Ray Robinson and Muhammad Ali. Soon afterward, Davis took to X to respond quite harshly to Scully’s comment. “That big strong a** goofy that he trains is not a Hall of Fame fighter and he’s a**,” Davis wrote. Despite Davis’ words, Beterbiev achieved the undisputed status, which Davis doesn’t even have on his radar.

Is Gervonta Davis’ record padded? Of course, it is. However, it’s hard to blame the boxer when the sport itself has turned into no less than a business transaction. Gone are the days when boxers fought for their legacies—the only thing boxers fight for now is that sweet sweet honey. What do you think about the matter?
