Boxing is one of those sports that holds the key to one’s transformation. It holds the power to heal and push individuals into a tomorrow that is cleaner and healthier than ever. History speaks to us when we look for such examples. This is one such story of a Kingpin who now uses the potential boxing has to help kids in distress. He is no ordinary trainer. He has trained one of the boxers in the world today, and his clientele includes names like that of Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis.

Calvin Ford’s journey as a trainer started after he finished his ten years of prison time. He earned this time in return for his high-profiting yielding business in drug circles. However, the sentence time turned him around for good. Now, he uses much of his time with kids in the Baltimore area who come from broken and troubled households. He leverages the power of boxing to make a positive impact on the community. His journey speaks of reflection, perseverance, and introspection. This is Calvin Ford!

In the troubled neighborhood of west Baltimore, situates itself a boxing gym named, Upton Boxing Centre. Here, kids come to escape the volatile environments and become something. In a conversation with CBS Mornings, the trainer said that it was this gym that saved his life. He also spoke about how it is the beacon of hope in the lives of at least 80 to 100 kids who walk into the gym every day. He said, “You know, a lot of kids they going through a lot of trauma at home. And when they get here, they got people who trynna help them. Achieve the best outta them.”

His journey is an inspiration to up-and-rising boxers who wish to go against all odds and do what they love to do: Box. A perfect homage to his life’s journey was found in the character of Dennis ‘Cutty’ Wise from the show ‘The Wire.’ At 58, he is all set to fight his first-ever professional boxing matchup this weekend. Speaking about the same, he said, “Anything you wanna do. You do it, Just do it.” He further added, “If god woke you up in the morning, you have the ability to do anything you want.”

The force behind Tank’s rise

Gervonta Davis is seemingly one of the biggest names in the boxing sphere today. He first walked into Ford’s Uptown Boxing Centre when he was seven years old. Now, a 28-year-old world champion, he can still be found boxing at the same gym in Baltimore. Their aim to grab the world title started when Tank lived with his grandmother and was looking for a father figure who would help him achieve his dream. He found that father figure in Calvin.

As Davis rose to victory in his boxing career, his trainer knew that he had to keep him off the path that Calvin himself had walked on. And he did just that. In an interview, he said, “I didn’t want him getting in trouble, I wanted to make sure that we was together, I used to take him to work with me.” In the story captured by CBS, Tank describes his trainer on a very emotional note. He said, “You’ll be inspired to know what he beat. How many he lives he saved? How many kids he lost but never lost faith?
