Social media is a breeding ground for viral content, but sometimes a blast from the past can bring people together in unexpected ways. Former boxing world champion Jamel Herring recently unearthed an oldie but goodie: a video of a close encounter with a bear! The unearthed clip has reignited his fans’ interest, proving that social media can be more than just fleeting trends.

Almost a decade-old video resurfaced on the internet where a man is seen having a terrifying encounter with a bear. Not just any bear. A grizzly bear. At first, the bear appears friendly and interactive with the man who stands dangerously close to the bear for what looks like a photo op. The man remains still. Suddenly, the wild bear transforms into a beast mauling the man to the ground. The bear uses its mouth to grab the man by the neck. The animal then starts thrashing his beleaguered victim around while still biting down on the man’s neck.

Soon, other individuals jump in an attempt to save the man’s life. One man starts beating the bear with a stick while two others spray the animal with bear sprays which causes the bear to drop the man and run away. The man seeing his chance runs away while in agony. Judging from the attack, there is no doubt that the man was hurt badly. Fortunately, the man lived to see another day, which is not the case with most bear attacks. This is what was highlighted by the former WBO junior lightweight champion.

An X user posted the video while sarcastically noting in the captions, “Bears are complete misunderstood animals. When handled peoperly, they are wonderful friends.” Herring had a rather practical remark about it. The former boxing champ felt that it is a wild beast and has the instincts to attack and hunt and it is foolish of us to think otherwise. Thus, he wrote, “Bear sized his a** up, and acted like… a bear.”

Jamel Herring, a native of Cincinnati, Ohio was last seen inside the squared circle in April 2024, fighting against Jackson Job England. The 38-year-old lost the bout. Though Semper Fi had already announced retirement in 2022 after losing to Shakur Stevenson, he came back to the ring 3 more times. For now, he has no matches scheduled. However, the former champion is doing good by keeping his fans informed.

Similar to Herring, there is another well-known figure from the realm of combat sports who is also known for his knowledge of bears. Not too long ago, he spoke about what one can do in the event of a bear attack. Let’s take a look at who he is and what he has to say.

Joe Rogan suggests what to do if mauled by a bear

Joe Rogan, the online bear expert and UFC commentator is known for his podcast where a discussion some or the other ways turns into a conversation involving bears. Over the years, he has invited a plethora of guests on his podcast from a variety of fields. His conversations with them have thus made him a well-learned man. In one of the episodes of the ‘Joe Rogan Experience’, the podcaster explained to Bryan Callen what to do in the event of a bear attack, specifically a grizzly bear attack.

Rogan advised, “If it’s a female grizzly, you are literally better off letting her fu*k you up. You just curl up in a ball, you are supposed to put your hand behind your neck. Lay in a fetal position, and don’t let her get access to your organs. It’s one of the reasons why it is really important to have a strong backpack. She wants to immobilize you as a threat to her children.”

He further explained that you should just curl up on the ground till the female bear attacks your backpack. That way you will suffer less injury. “But that’s assuming you can survive that,” Rogan said, “She’s probably gonna break your arm, she’s probably going to snap your legs, bite into you in ways you can’t imagine.” He added that if a male grizzly bear is trying to attack you, it is because he is starving in which case, like it or not, you are food.

Perhaps, unlike Winnie the Pooh, bears are not the creatures we have always thought them to be. It is crucial to exercise caution and remain vigilant when engaging with wild animals. What do you think about Herring and Rogan’s remarks about bears? Put it down in the comments section below.
