Vergil Ortiz Jr. is on top of the world. The young 25-year-old boxer remains undefeated and takes up his 20th victory against Fredrick Lawson which he won via a TKO. This was the first fight for him in the last 17 months and he weighed in at a career high of 156 lbs. As of now, he is competing in the welterweight division and is also the International welterweight champion. His trainer has now hinted at a possible move up in weight.
If so, this opens up an opportunity for him to compete in a Light middleweight division and endeavor to be a champion. But why does he want to move up and what does his future look like in the new division? Let’s find out.

Legendary trainer, Robert Garica, the trainer for the young champion, believes Ortiz is too big to compete in the welterweight division. He stated, “I think it was time to go up in weight kids. Too big and he’s not like he’s losing power because he’s going in there against a bigger champion.” He asserted that the Light Middleweight division would suit him much better and wants him to become a champion in this division.

Robert Garcia then went on to assert that the boxer will be active every year and compete at least three times. “He is full of energy right now. He is talking to everybody, he is going back and forth so the last two pounds when he has to make 154 pounds will be no problem. He should fight for the title and hopefully this year you know, we are going to keep him busy and try to get three fights this year,” the trainer added.
The future looks exciting for the 25-year-old. Will he find much success in the new division? Time will tell but Garcia could not sound more confident about it. But let’s take a look at who Ortiz teased to fight next in the post-fight interview.
Ortiz teases fans about his next fight
Ortiz did not explicitly call out anybody but he did tease a fight against the Australian, Tim Tszyu, who is the current WBO light middleweight champion. In the post-fight interview, he stated he was ready to go to Australia to get a fight. He stated, “I will fight anyone, anywhere, anytime. So, if we got to go to Australia, I am down.” He also went on to add, “This is a sport where we want to prove that we are the best; that we are the strongest, we are the best fighters. That’s what a fighter is supposed to do,” showing his determination to take on champions in the sport.
