Is Floyd Schofield ready to face the likes of Shakur Stevenson after his recent scare?

Despite a knockdown scare, Floyd Schofield sailed through the René Giron hurdle to cement his position in the lightweight roster. Fighting on the Golden Boy card, the New Jersey-born boxer continued on his winning streak and secured his eighteenth victory unanimously. As far as WBA rankings go, he is just below star challenger William Zepeda.

So how does it go from here? Who will Schofield fight in his next outing? As it came with a unique solution, an innocuous reflection on the matter seems to have drawn some attention. It didn’t take much time before fans took to their keyboards and penned some suggestions, albeit not in the most helpful of ways.

Sharing the record and photograph of Floyd Schofield and Abel Mendoza, dantheboxingman, a popular boxing commentator online suggested, “LETS GET THIS SOMETIME IN 2025‼️ 😤😤.” Like Schofield, Mendoza is also an unbeaten fighter. His last fight took place on June 28, when he defeated German Ivan Meraz back on his home turf in Texas.

Perhaps Schofield was looking forward to an emphatic win. But in his attempt at trumping an entertaining fight, the talented boxer lost his patience and nearly risked a relatively easy victory. The third round sounded off the first alarm. Following an exchange, he walked away from Giron and pointed out that he was hit on the back of the head. Thankfully the referee stepped in time; otherwise, Giron might have continued to hit ‘Kid Austin’ to his advantage.

If that wasn’t enough, the sequence that shocked everyone occurred in the eleventh round when a solid left from Giron sent Schofield down to the canvas. It was the first drop in the 22-year-old’s young career. Later Schofield remarked, “I wanna give the fans an entertaining fight, at the end of the day, and you know, just bang it out if I gotta bang it out, you know?” For a promising star who called out Shakur Stevenson a setback would have changed the equations altogether.

Nevertheless, some of the fans didn’t buy dantheboxingman’s suggestion. Let’s check what they had to say.

This fan emphasized Abel Mendoza’s aggressive style of fighting. This is what they said: “Mendoza beats the hell out of a cab driver every week.” Perhaps they wanted to suggest that it might be too much for someone like Floyd Schofield.

Not sure why, but the next user wondered how come the record (of either one or both) featured zero knockouts. Nevertheless, they appeared pretty clear on not watching the fight if it ever came through. “0 KO’s? Wouldn’t watch either in the back garden.

According to the following fan, the lineup might include former two-division world champion Jose Pedraza. They said, “They will give him Pedraza [next].” The next one took a step further. Not sure at whom they were aiming—Schofield or Mendoza—but they felt that the particular fighter didn’t deserve such hype. They said, “You gotta stop promoting this n*a.

While a few other fans scoffed at the suggestion. This fan felt that a matchup between Floyd Schofield and Shakur Stevenson made better sense. “Nah, let’s get Floyd vs. Shakur,” stated the fan. Probably much of the apprehension stems from the relative anonymity of Mendoza.

Though he has amassed an enviable record of 41 wins against no losses, ‘El Zorro’ has largely stayed out of the limelight. A 73% knockout-to-win rate is impressive, but the big question is, has he ever fought any of the ranked contenders? Then for Schofield, if his aim is to usurp Gervonta Davis or Shakur Stevenson, then he has to get into a bigger fight. A matchup against Zepeda could be a good start.

What is your take? Who do you feel Floyd Schofield should fight next?
