It is worth mentioning that the build-up to the fight was of Gargantuan proportions in itself. HBO even released a series called De La Hoya-Mayweather 24/7, which went into the fighter’s training camps.
The bout started slowly and picked up pace as it went. And Mayweather was, as usual, in his suave and defensive best. At the end of 12 rounds, judges Jerry Roth (115–113) and Chuck Giampa (116–112) scored the bout in favor of Mayweather. On the other hand, judge Tom Kaczmarek (115-113) ruled in favor of De La Hoya.
Mayweather was declared the winner by decision, thereby earning him the WBC title.
