Puerto Rico’s Edgar Berlanga is riding high after a truly spectacular 3rd round knockout win over his latest opponent Jonathan Gonzalez-Ortiz, a boxer who took an 11-year break from boxing before 2024. And now, conversations about a fight against ‘Interim’ WBA super middleweight champion Caleb Plant are already the chatter among fans.
Plant has been eyeing ‘The Chosen One’ since before the Canelo Alvarez fight. Why? Well, if you remember the Canelo vs. Berlanga press conference, Berlanga and Plant went at it, throwing verbal jabs at each other. Now that Berlanga is back in the green column, both parties understand they have a pay-per-view bonanza on their hands if they agree to fight.
Amid the excitement though, the 27-year-old Nuyorican has revealed why he is too smart for Plant. And spoiler alert—it has something to do with former five-division champion Floyd Mayweather. “I’m on a different level now,” Berlanga told iFL TV while walking out of Caribe Royale Arena in Florida after his latest boxing match.

“I’mma do the same thing to Plant, Munguia, Charlo… I got dynamite in these hands. Like what Floyd Mayweather told me. He said, ‘You got dynamite in those hands, just let them sh*ts fly, nobody is going to stand there with you. You hit too hard, you too smart. IQ’…,” Berlanga told the reporter. However, the question is, will Berlanga really end up fighting ‘Sweethands’ Plant next?

Eddie Hearn supports Edgar Berlanga vs. Caleb Plant
Berlanga never wanted to fight his Puerto Rican opponent, but it was a significant fight nonetheless, as he finished his obligations with Matchroom Boxing. However, Eddie Hearn hopes Berlanga stays with his company, and the best way he sees that happening is through the Berlanga-Plant fight. So, when ‘The Chosen One’ started taking names after the fight, including Plant’s, Hearn was quick to support him.

“It’s important,” Berlanga said of fighting Plant. “I want to shut his mouth…He got beat up by Benavidez and he got knocked out by Canelo. It’s time for me to retire him and send him back.” Meanwhile, Hearn told iFL TV, “I want to see him fight Caleb Plant. I think it’s a great fight. I think both of those guys are full of spirit… He’s got spunk, doesn’t he? He doesn’t back down from anybody.”

Despite this, it’s currently unclear whether Berlanga would extend his contract with Matchroom Boxing. It was previously reported that Plant originally wanted to fight IBF super middleweight champion William Scull, but Hearn chose to go for a small comeback fight, which was in their contract.
