Former five-division champion Floyd Mayweather seems to get dragged into every insult hurled toward WBA lightweight champion Gervonta Davis. The duo previously worked together as a boxer-promoter, and Floyd was even Davis’ mentor for some time before their relationship fell apart. Regardless, the father of the WBO super lightweight champion Teofimo Lopez has shared his thoughts on Davis’ retirement.
You see, ‘Tank’ recently announced that he is tired of the politics in boxing, and wants to quit the sport to focus on therapy and get away from it all. He revealed during the Lamont Roach press conference that after three more fights, at the end of 2025, he would hang up his gloves for good. Whether this remains true is yet to be seen, but Lopez Sr. criticized Davis for following Mayweather’s footsteps.
The thing is, Davis also mentioned that he plans to slap Lopez when he sees him, following some racist remarks Lopez made in the past. “Whichever monkey wants to get the banana,” Lopez told Broadway Joel when asked who he would like to fight first between Davis and Terence Crawford. “They say they are gorillas. I’m a lion, I eat them.”

Though Lopez later clarified that he was just trying to get under their skin, the damage was done. Speaking to Fight Hype, Davis reacted to Lopez’s statement, “I’m going slap the s**t out of him when I see him.” Davis had added that if Lopez was in front of him, he would change his demeanor really quickly.
However, Lopez Sr. seems to want the confrontation to happen. Reacting to Davis’ retirement, Lopez Sr. said, “He took Floyd’s advice to fight nobodies and make all this money.” Davis has long been criticized for cherry-picking his opponents, something Floyd Mayweather is also well versed in. Many claim Mayweather either waited for fighters to grow old or didn’t fight them at all.

It’s also worth mentioning that Mayweather had teased retirement several times before actually going ahead with it in 2017. Regardless, Lopez Sr. continued comparing Davis’ ring activity to Floyd’s. “Look, Floyd could fight a grandmother right now, and they’ll go pay for it. So why risk it?” he said. “My son is going to knock this dude out. I already know it. He’s southpaw, he’s small… He’s not going to touch him with that left hand.”

Turning to threats from Davis about slapping his son, Lopez Sr. confidently noted, “And he’s so stupid because he’s announcing that he’s going to confront us and slap my son. I want to see that happen.” Meanwhile, Lopez has also responded to Davis’ threat.

Teofimo Lopez has a plan for Gervonta Davis’ slap
‘The Takeover’ has been advocating for a fight between them for a while now. But with ‘Tank’ retiring from the sport, it has made the prospect of the fight seem more murky. Yet when Davis threatened to slap Lopez upon seeing him, it seemed to have given the super lightweight champion a brilliant idea.

Speaking to Fight Hype during the Emanuel Navarrete vs. Oscar Valdez fight in Arizona, Lopez asked Davis to let him know when he plans to slap him so he can call ESPN and his promoter Top Rank to turn it into a fight. “Let me know so I can call ESPN, Top Rank and we get a ring and we make it happen like that,” Lopez said.
That being said, it appears while Gervonta Davis is planning to exit the sport, Teofimo Lopez and his father are contemplating a confrontation with Davis in the ring. However, whether that ends up happening is yet to be seen. Would you like to see Lopez get slapped?
