Gervonta Davis shocked the world last month when he announced that he would part ways from boxing by the end of 2025. Tank claimed that he is fed up with the sport and wants to spend more time with his family. The announcement sent shockwaves down the boxing community as fans still could not wrap their head around the announcement.
Many experts and fighters have since shared their opinions on the announcement and some have even supported the 30-year-old. On the other hand, some fans have been urging the WBA lightweight champion to reconsider retirement as he still has a lot to offer. On Tuesday, his former promoter, Floyd Mayweather‘s uncle Jeff Mayweather cited his opinion on Gervonta Davis’ retirement announcement while confirming fans’ worst fears.

In a conversation with ‘Fred Talks Fighting,’ the 60-year-old supported Tank’s decision, claiming that it is not a spur-of-the-moment thing. “I believe him. He’s been talking about retiring for a while. So yeah, I believe him. I believe him,” revealed Mayweather.
Jeff Mayweather further talked about how Gervonta Davis will possibly enter into a few more fights to become financially secure before finally stepping down. “He should have definitely financially secure and I think that’s the only thing. That’s why he’s still fighting. He want to be.. make sure that he’s secure,” contended Mayweather. Davis himself has claimed that he wants to earn as much money as he can from boxing before hanging up the gloves next year.
The 60-year-old truly understands Davis’ decision to spend more time with his family and supports him wholeheartedly in his choice. Jeff added, “He wants to spend time with his kids and things like that. And I mean that’s good. I mean basically be able to retire and you know and be able to enjoy his life with his kids.”
Ever since the retirement announcement, fans have also been worried about Tank’s legacy in the sport. While the three-division champion has achieved many accolades, fans think that he still has a lot more to give. Jeff Mayweather also looked at the Baltimore native’s impact on the game and what legacy he will leave behind after his retirement at 30.

Gervonta Davis’ perfect window
The Grand Rapids native claimed that even if the 30-0 boxer retires right now, he will have an unmatched legacy. According to the 60-year-old, Tank’s retirement timing is perfect as it allows him to leave the sport as an undefeated champion, considering he wins all his upcoming fights in 2025.
Mayweather declared, “I think it’s better to walk away with your legacy intact rather than just keep fighting. Then all of a sudden something happens and then you know what happens. Then you never get, you never get a chance to retire.” Jeff himself is no stranger to searching for a perfect moment to retire, as he kept losing at the latter stages of his career. He lost 5 of his last 11 matches and drew three of them before eventually retiring after two straight victories in his final two matches.

According to the 32-10-5 boxer, Gervonta Davis has a perfect window to retire as an undefeated star and he should grab it. If he keeps on fighting and somehow loses one match, it will always be a blemish on the record and no boxer can be satisfied with that. He revealed, “You’re gonna keep fighting. You’re not, you’re not gonna want to stop. Because now you got to try to rebuild your fan base that you already had and plus you want to try to beat that person that beat you,” claiming how one loss can completely change Tank’s career trajectory.
While Jeff Mayweather supports Gervonta Davis’ decision, fans would not be so pleased. After all, the Baltimore native is one of the best boxers of this generation. But as the 60-year-old stated, there is nothing more important than family. Let us know your thoughts down below.
