Fighting on the David Benavidez–David Morrell undercard, Curmel Moton managed to salvage his reputation that took a hit following last year’s weigh-in fiasco. The third-round demolition of Cuban Frank Zaldivar has added another layer of icing on the cake to the unbeaten record. It might be too early to speculate whether young Moton is ready for the grueling tests that lie ahead.
However, the Salt Lake City-born fighter seems pretty confident of accomplishing more. With great Floyd Mayweather Jr. backing him, he could take his game to the next level. But has he reached a stage where he can take down a fighter who maintains an enviable, unbeatable record like him? Added intrigue hints at a new threat on the horizon who’s on the brink of breaking a record that has hitherto remained unchallenged. Will Curmel Moton let it slide or gear up to put the spanner in the works?

Amidst callouts and denials
The Ring Magazine shared an interesting post. It highlighted a Twitter back-and-forth taking place. The protagonists included Curmel Moton, Abel Mendoza, and a few boxing enthusiasts. The commotion possibly started with an innocuous post from the World Boxing News (WBN).
Featuring Abel Mendoza’s photo and records, the message contemplated a possibility. “Floyd Mayweather’s 50-0 record is under severe risk over the next three years from lightweight Abel Mendoza. The Texan reached 42-0 in December and fought nine times in the last two years. He could overtake Mayweather in 2028,” it read. It didn’t take much time before the report caught Curmel Moton’s attention. The young fighter shrugged it off with a simple, “🗑️🗑️🗑️.”
But the terse response only succeeded in drawing a smile from Mendoza, who teased a surprise for everyone. But Curmel Moton continued. He picked another post that suggested a matchup between him and Abel Mendoza! Responding to the tweet, Mendoza once again reiterated, “I got something big coming.”

But Mayweather Jr.’s protege would have none of it. He seemed certain about delivering a sound drubbing to the Texas-based fighter who goes by the moniker ‘El Zorro.’ “I’d do him so bad!” said Moton.

For the record, in a separate message, World Boxing News updated that, contrary to popular beliefs, Abel Mendoza does not appear focused on breaking Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s record. “My goal was never to beat Floyd’s record. It is to become a world champion. If I have got to be 100-0 to do that, then so be it,” he told them in an interview.

Though he might have amassed a mammoth record, which even some of the P4P best have yet to achieve, Mendoza’s fights and the opponents he has faced thus far have largely remained out of scrutiny. But Mendoza remains unperturbed.

A fight between the two unraked lightweights could prove a game-changer. It’s been slightly over a year since Curmel Moton made his debut. Facing a fighter who has been in the business for the last eight years might prove a daunting challenge. But on the same token, stopping Mendoza would not only help him sustain his famed mentor’s prized record but also rev up his career, potentially lining him up against some of the ranked contenders.
What about you? Do you think Curmel Moton has it in him to defeat Abel Mendoza?
