Floyd Mayweather Jr. recently hit his 48th year. As with any major milestone, you’d expect nothing less than thoughtful, perhaps even extravagant, gifts. But Floyd’s late birthday present wasn’t quite what anyone would have anticipated. Enter Gervonta Davis, who once shared a father-son dynamic with Money Mayweather. The gift he had in store was, to say the least, unexpected. Was it a heartfelt gesture? Or something far more calculated?

Call it impeccable timing, a strategic move, or just plain savvy—what Tank Davis delivered was a message that left everyone reeling. While Mayweather had publicly stated there were no hard feelings following their split in 2022, his actions spoke louder than words. And now, with Gervonta gearing up for his upcoming fight on March 1st against Lamont Roach Jr., he released a workout video. At first glance, it seemed like just another training clip. But peel back the layers, and it’s clear that there’s more to this video than meets the eye—could it be a subtle jab? A veiled message?

Just moments ago, Gervonta Davis shared his training video on X, showcasing his unexceptional footwork and skills. While him throwing sleek combinations on the mitts was certainly on display, it wasn’t his talent that caught everyone’s attention—there was something else that truly stood out. It’s the caption, which read, Life is better when you’re gone and I don’t need ya.. #TheONE”

The video featured Gervonta Davis practicing in the Headbangers Boxing Gym. Despite exchanging failed Valentine’s poems for his opponent, Gervonta Davis is making sure to bring the fire inside the ring. Fresh off an impressive 8th-round KO against Frank Martin last year, the Baltimore native boasts an unblemished 30-0 record. His next opponent, however, comes in with a solid 25-1 record, his lone loss to Jamel Herring.

If Davis wins, he plans to retire after three more fights this year, ensuring a perfect career—much like his former mentor, Floyd Mayweather, who walked away undefeated with a 50-0, 27 KOs record. But given Davis’ unpredictable nature, no one can say for sure what’s next. However, one recent move seems like a clear jab at Mayweather.

In his caption, Davis made a statement: he’s more than capable of going solo. So, why did Gervonta Davis drop that bomb, especially on Floyd Mayweather’s birthday? It’s no coincidence. The tension between the two began when Davis accused Mayweather of banning him from his gym while preparing for his 2023 bout with Ryan Garcia. Soon after, Davis criticized his former mentor for unresolved financial issues in Dubai. Since then, the back-and-forth has continued, with both parties taking subtle shots at each other. So, what did Mayweather do in the first place?

Floyd Mayweather threw a curveball at Gervonta Davis

Last year, Mayweather posted an old training video of the 30-year-old and Devin Haney. The 18-minute fight of 6 rounds showed ‘The Dream’ being coached by Mayweather. Whereas Gervonta Davis was appearing out of shape but still holding his ground. The timing of the post raised suspicions, as it came shortly after Davis’ impressive knockout win over ‘The Ghost’, which was his debut fight under Amazon Prime’s new boxing deal.

Some believe Mayweather’s post was an attempt to overshadow Davis’ victory. However, others think it could be related to the arrival of Richard Schaefer, the former CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, to Mayweather Promotions in 2024. Despite Mayweather’s genius in the ring and his business acumen, this video has raised questions as well as concerns.

Tensions reached a breaking point, especially after Davis’ former ally, Leonard Ellerbe, switched from Mayweather Promotions to Gervonta Davis Promotions. Coach Kenny Ellis has even urged Mayweather to stop the public bickering and let Davis move on with his new team. Ellis warned Mayweather that continuing the feud could have serious consequences beyond boxing. “If he is not with him no more, leave him alone. Let it be. Stop bickering. Because this sh*t is bigger than boxing… Sh*t can happen because we bickering. So stop this sh*t. It ain’t just boxing. It’s all walks of life,” he revealed while talking to Millcity Boxing last year.

So what do you think of the situation? Do you think Gervonta Davis was justified in taking things further, or did he go too far by making his move, especially on Floyd Mayweather’s birthday?
