Floyd Mayweather's praise for Curmel Moton—Is it justified or overblown?

Curmel Moton is now 4-0. The young boxer, who turned eighteen last month, secured another dazzling victory tonight. After knocking down Nikolai Buzolin in the first round, Moton sealed his victory in the second, with the referee finally pulling the Russian-born fighter out of his victory. It’s worth noting that the first was the rising star’s first foray into the lightweight division. Like good-old-fashioned promoters, Floyd Mayweather Jr. was present at the ringside to encourage his charge.

Needless to say, the undefeated former champion’s heart swelled with pride over Curmel Moton’s statement win. Speaking with the media later, he recalled what absorbed him the most: having the young Moton receive training at his world-famous gym. Curmel Moton defeated Anthony Cuba on the Tim TszyuSebastian Fundora headliner. Subsequently, his name came up for the Canelo AlvarezJaime Munguia show and later Gervonta Davis‘ June 15 title defense. But to no avail. It may have only added to the suspense over his comeback fight. Reportedly, the latest match arrived at short notice. Only for him to turn the tables on a grown man!

Carlos Contreras Legaspi, ESPN‘s Spanish language channel, and ESPN Deportes‘ MMA writer highlighted how happy Floyd Mayweather Jr. looked as, post-match, he walked out meeting and greeting people he knew, all smiles. But even before the fight started, fans got a glimpse of what the young boxer means to Mayweather Jr. as he went to the former’s dressing room to wish him all the best. After he met the prodigious boxer, the former world champion shook hands with the rest of the team as well.

The road to an easy win

The fight came as a total surprise to both Moton and his supporters. Speaking with fans through his Twitter handle, he revealed that he was making it to the weight limits of the lightweight division. When one of the users asked whether he had moved to 135 pounds, Moton replied that it was just for the Buzolin fight.

Right from the time the fight started, he went charging at the 36-year-old opponent. He made deft use of his right hand and landed neat body shots to stagger Nikolai Buzolin. With Mayweather Jr. watching his moves, Moton soon had his opponent fighting with desperation on the ropes.
