Curmel Moton is now 4-0. The young boxer, who turned eighteen last month, secured another dazzling victory tonight. After knocking down Nikolai Buzolin in the first round, Moton sealed his victory in the second, with the referee finally pulling the Russian-born fighter out of his victory. It’s worth noting that the first was the rising star’s first foray into the lightweight division. Like good-old-fashioned promoters, Floyd Mayweather Jr. was present at the ringside to encourage his charge.
Needless to say, the undefeated former champion’s heart swelled with pride over Curmel Moton’s statement win. Speaking with the media later, he recalled what absorbed him the most: having the young Moton receive training at his world-famous gym. Curmel Moton defeated Anthony Cuba on the Tim Tszyu–Sebastian Fundora headliner. Subsequently, his name came up for the Canelo Alvarez–Jaime Munguia show and later Gervonta Davis‘ June 15 title defense. But to no avail. It may have only added to the suspense over his comeback fight. Reportedly, the latest match arrived at short notice. Only for him to turn the tables on a grown man!

Carlos Contreras Legaspi, ESPN‘s Spanish language channel, and ESPN Deportes‘ MMA writer highlighted how happy Floyd Mayweather Jr. looked as, post-match, he walked out meeting and greeting people he knew, all smiles. The short clip on the tweet shows the former world champion, accompanied by his security details, following Curmel Moton as he moved on following the latter’s emphatic win.

But even before the fight started, fans got a glimpse of what the young boxer means to Mayweather Jr. as he went to the former’s dressing room to wish him all the best. After he met the prodigious boxer, the former world champion shook hands with the rest of the team as well.
One of the presenters at the Honda Center asked Floyd Mayweather Jr. when he caught that spark coming off Curmel Moton when, as a young ten-year-old, he visited the Mayweather gym. ‘Money’ revealed that the Salt Lake City-born boxer must have been eight or nine when they met.

However, right from the onset, he could see the kind of talent he had. “I’m happy that I was able to be a part of his life and take him to that next level,” he said. When another presenter asked, what was it about Curmel Moton that stood him apart from the rest of the crowd? In one word, Mayweather Jr. replied, ‘hunger’. He revealed, “Hunger, he wanted to be great. He’s boxed so many different champions throughout the years, even as a amateur. I just want the best for him, but, so much talent.”
Watching a young boxer from his stable carrying the torch that he lit so many years ago, clearly one can imagine the kind of pride welled up inside Floyd Mayweather Jr.
The road to an easy win
The fight came as a total surprise to both Moton and his supporters. Speaking with fans through his Twitter handle, he revealed that he was making it to the weight limits of the lightweight division. When one of the users asked whether he had moved to 135 pounds, Moton replied that it was just for the Buzolin fight.
Right from the time the fight started, he went charging at the 36-year-old opponent. He made deft use of his right hand and landed neat body shots to stagger Nikolai Buzolin. With Mayweather Jr. watching his moves, Moton soon had his opponent fighting with desperation on the ropes.

The first warning shots came towards the end of the first round. Moton’s left hand found the mark, forcing Buzolin to sit down. Perhaps the writing on the wall was apparent to many. The second round didn’t go that far. As it reached half-way, vicious combinations from Curmel Moton made the referee realize it and step in to stop the fight and free the hapless Nikolai Buzolin.
