Floyd Mayweather Once Came Clean on the Most Illegal Thing He Did in Boxing

A sport is governed by a set of well-established rules. Boxing, being no exception, has its own governing rules which, at the core of its heart, seek to make the sport safer and fairer for everyone taking part. In amateur boxing, there are categories based on both weight and age. Although some rules in the sport slightly vary in areas, most of them remain almost always the same.

These rules are needed not only to establish discipline but, as Floyd Patterson once said, also to cultivate and preserve “good sportsmanship”. A breach in maintaining and following these rules will result in foul play and be liable to be booked as “illegal”.

Contrary to these words, recently, a video has been unearthed where former world champion boxer Floyd Mayweather admitted the most illegal thing he once did in boxing.

In his boxing career, Floyd Mayweather has often been a victim of foul play. His loss in the 1996 Olympics stirred up a debate as many believed Mayweather to have won the semi-final match instead of his opponent, in whose favor the officials scored the bout.

In his pro career, the likes of Marcos Maidana and Victor Ortiz fought him unclean until ‘Money’ took a stand and won the fights in great fashion. But when did Mayweather himself commit something illegal and unfair in the prestigious sport?

Concerning the matter, in the above interview, the following is what Mayweather said:

“So you know when I was sixteen, was so crazy was this. Nobody knows this. And I never told nobody this. When I was sixteen, I had fourteen fights. From 1987 to 1993, if I’m not mistaken. I had fourteen fights against kids my age. When I was 15, I fought a guy that was 23. Which was illegal.”

Mayweather’s debut in amateur boxing in 1987

According to records available, during his amateur days, Mayweather had 44 fights. He made his debut in 1987 against an individual named Chris Holden at Baker College, Owosso.

Mayweather won by an RSC in the first round itself. For those who don’t know, RSC stands for ‘Referee Stopped the Contest”. It happens when one side leaves the other bereft of responses by being too strong in the fight.
