Floyd Mayweather Jr. is coming back to the ring on August 24 at Mexico City against John Gotti III for their much anticipated rematch. And get this, he is looking to put on a show! Before announcing the rematch in June, ‘Money’ Mayweather made a similar announcement last November during the Super Bowl weekend in Las Vegas, but nothing really materialized.
However, this time, it’s official, as even the six-time MMA veteran confirmed the booking on his Instagram stories. The duo originally squared off against each other back in June 2023, where many would remember things went out of control. So, when surrounded by a bunch of reporters during Curmel Moton’s last outing, Mayweather revealed his intentions with the upcoming skirmish.

Chatting about his protégé Moton, a reporter probed Mayweather, asking if he’d KO the Gambino crime family head’s grandson. The five-division champ just shrugged and said, “I’m putting on a show.” Mayweather’s been known to host exhibition fights here and there against all kinds of opponents.
In fact, the retired boxer has even fought several influencers, like Logan Paul and KSI’s brother Deji, to name a few. Regardless, when the reporter reminded Mayweather about the chaos in his first fight against Gotti III, the former world champion said, “That was unbelievable! I think the last [time] we went out there, we performed, we had the ball. I feel like people enjoyed it, everyone enjoyed it”.
During the sixth round of their fight last year, the frustration between Mayweather Gotti spilled into utter mayhem. Even though referee Kenny Bayless tried his best to stop the bout, Gotti continued to throw haymakers at Floyd, which led to both camps rushing into the ring for a melee. Gotti didn’t quite understand this stoppage from the referee, as he had explained last year.

During an interview with the MMA Hour featuring Ariel Helwani last year in June, Gotti III reflected on the stoppage to his fight against Mayweather. He said, “Kenny Bayless came over to my corner and Floyd’s and warned us the round before and said, ‘You guys have to stop cursing at one another. Otherwise, I’m gonna pull up the fight’”.

Despite being warned by the referee about trash talking to each other during the fight, Gotti remembers picking up where the two fighters left off as they continued their barrage of insults. However, he expressed his bewilderment at the stoppage, saying, “I have never seen anything like that. It was very weird”.
Having said that, the upcoming fight between Floyd Mayweather and John Gotti III is set to be yet another slugfest. And judging by their last encounter, an all-out brawl might be on the forecast. Hopefully, that doesn’t happen, and the bout goes smoothly. Do you think history will repeat itself?
