Did Mayweather's ego get in the way, or was there a deeper reason for shutting out Davis?

Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Gervonta Davis shared a dynamic never seen before. You could call it a mentor-mentee or a father-son relationship, but the bond is a thing of the past. It ended on a sour note after ‘Tank’ accused Mayweather of not allowing him to train at his gym for his fight against Ryan Garcia in 2023. But in 2022, Davis had already cut ties with Mayweather Promotions and jumped ship. Mayweather was not mad about it.

“Nothing lasts forever. I will always love Tank. I like him. Love him – look at him as a son. He has to do what’s best for him,” he said. But soon, ‘Tank’ started taking digs at the older pugilist. Remember how the 29-year-old alleged that ‘Pretty Boy’ was stuck in Dubai over unpaid debts? Things went downhill from there, so much so that people are speculating a bout between them.

Now Davis’s coaches have shared their thoughts about ‘Money’. Calvin Ford revealed what went behind the scenes in a clip uploaded on his Instagram handle.

First, coach Kenny Ellis was seen talking. He questioned, “If he is like a son to Floyd, why would you put him out? How could you put him out? Biggest fight of his career coming up and you put him out of the gym. Why? You want him to lose? That’s the question. Do you want him to lose?”

Next, it was Ford’s turn. He shed light on Mayweather Jr. and Davis’ emotional situation and he called it, a “different type of beast.” He continued, “That dad-coaching stuff. You get what I’m saying? It’s emotions in it. You know, that situation, boy, it’s heavy, you know.”

The Baltimore coach then explained how he called Mayweather and questioned him about not allowing ‘Tank’ in his gym. However, the undefeated boxer denied doing any such thing. Both the coaches put the accountability on Mayweather and Ellis even said, “I would love for the media to ask him ‘What was on your mind when you put Tank out of the gym?’ We from Baltimore, man. Any situation, we staying ten toes down. The grind don’t stop.”

However, Ford tried to see the positives. “I recall that day vividly; it was a lesson within a lesson. It was not a negative experience; in fact, it was quite the opposite, as it helped them overcome significant obstacles. What they initially perceived as adverse was, in reality, beneficial. One must discern the light within the darkness, and we recognized it – it was indeed good,” he wrote in the caption and also said something similar in the video.

According to Ford, it allowed the 30-0 record holder to work a little harder, and the outcome was the 7th round KO of ‘KingRy’. Davis also solidified his position as a top lightweight boxer and a PPV star. But what’s next for him?

Davis has great momentum and on December 14, he will defend his WBA title against Lamont Roach Jr. at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas. The latter has a 25-1-1 record. He last fought Feargal McCrory in June and won via TKO. His most significant victory was in 2023 when he defeated Hector Garcia by a split decision to capture a world title.

On the other hand, Davis last fought Frank Martin in June and won through KO. It will be interesting to see how this turns out. But the boxer’s relationship with Floyd Mayweather Jr. is now beyond repair and, in fact, he loves taking jabs at him on social media. This brings up a question, though. How does Floyd Mayweather Jr. feel when he watches Davis box now?

Well, you see, they met back in 2015— two years after the younger boxer made his pro debut. Mayweather saw Davis during one of Adrien Broner’s training camps and that’s how the latter joined Mayweather Promotions.
