The legendary 2013 clash between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Canelo Alvarez is not just known for being one of the highest-earning boxing fights. It is also known to be that point in boxing history that a fighter rose to ultimate fame. It was at this moment that Canelo Alvarez found his place amongst the legends. He might have lost the fight to Mayweather, but he won a lot more that night.
Canelo Alvarez is that name in the boxing realm that echoes even today for his boxing prowess. He has time and again proved that his presence in the pound-for-pound fighters list is no accident. But it is a result of tremendous efforts, courage, and sacrifice, that Alvarez made to reach where he is. His boxing skills are highly revered within the community. Joining this bandwagon is one of his opponents’ brother, Ricky Hatton.

From Mayweather loss to becoming a boxing legend, this is Canelo Alvarez
It was 2013 when the Mexican fighter clashed with the best boxer of the time, Floyd Mayweather Jr. An underdog for the big clash, Canelo did lose to Mayweather, but that moment marked his name in the annals of boxing. Not a knockout, not a split decision, but a majority decision in favor of Mayweather. It was not an easy undertaking for Canelo. He made the fight interesting from the beginning, but his opponent was ‘Pretty Boy’. His precision and clean jabs were a match to none.

Remembering the fight and the incredible growth the Mexican fighter has shown since then, British boxer Ricky spoke about how Cinnamon emerged a better boxer despite a devastating loss against Floyd.
He said, “Floyd Mayweather created a monster, didn’t he? You know Mayweather boxed his absolute lungs off. You know what I mean? And he’s come back, won everything. One of the best pound-for-pound fighters.I mean you know, you look through the history. I mean I don’t think he’d be the best but he’d be up there. You know what I mean? He’s one hell of a fighter, you know and the fact that my brother went the distance with him when he’s knocked out so many quality fighters, makes me very very proud of my brother.”
However, what happened when Ricky’s brother fought against a young Canelo Alvarez?
What was the Mathew Hatton Undertaking all about?
It was late 2010, and Canelo was trying to make his name in boxing. It was at this point that another fighter in his supposed prime was offered to fight against a budding Canelo. It was Mathew Hatton.

Canelo was just 20 when he clashed against Hatton in the welterweight division. With an unbeaten record of 36 fights and a name much traveled, Alvarez knew what he signed up for. And he needed exactly that. Moreover, Mathew was not an underdog for the fight. He could also fight and how. At that point, his record stood at 41 wins from 47 fights. This was perhaps a fight that no one wanted to miss. a huge crowd gathered that night. It was a clash that did live up to the hype it had amassed.
When Hatton arrived that night, he knew it was a fight that could go either way. He says, “I felt the weight in his shots straight away and the way he moved – I knew within about a minute – I knew that it was going to be a tough night.” His only strategy that night? “I just had to fight.” And he fought valiantly. The fight went the full distance that night. In the end, Canelo went home victorious on points. Not a lot of fights end up in this fashion which was nail-biting till the end, Hatton vs. Alvarez will further echo in the boxing realm.
