After months of speculation over his return, it seems Floyd Mayweather Jr. has some information on his comeback fight. Last year, their fight ended on a highly controversial note. By any stretch of imagination, it needed closure. How do you do that? Of course, go for a rematch. Through an Instagram post, the boxing legend updated that the much-anticipated second edition of Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. John Gotti III is in place.

After the situation went awry during their June 11 fight, talks resumed soon after things cooled down between the two sides. The new year began with rumors of a much-thought-of rematch between Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao. Then, not long ago, the former five-division champion shared a poster. It featured a tentative fight in Mexico City. Per the initial reports, it appeared that former opponent Victor Ortiz would join him for the dance on August 24. However, as it appears, the fight never saw the light of day. If ‘Money’s revelation stands true, although the date and place remain unchanged, the main character in the plot has definitely changed.

#UnfinishedBusiness August 24th Mayweather Vs. Gotti 3 Rematch in Mexico City. This is something you don’t want to miss!! @musicvibemx,” wrote Floyd Mayweather Jr. The fight poster shows him and John Gotti III facing each other. DAZN seems to be the live broadcaster of the event.

In February last year, fans saw Floyd Mayweather Jr. take on reality television personality Aaron Chalmers for a non-scoring bout. But soon after the uninspiring show at London’s O2 Arena, there was an announcement. Floyd Mayweather Jr. would face John Gotti III, the grandson of the late John Gotti, the head of the New York-based Gambino family.

The two met at Sunrise, Florida’s FLA Live Arena. Right from the time the fight began, trouble was written all over it. It witnessed incessant trash-talking between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and John Gotti III. The latter, a mixed martial artist who switched over to boxing not long ago, found it difficult to match up a bona fide boxing great’s skills.

Despite referee Kenny Bayless‘ warning to cease, the duo refused to back out of taunting each other. Finally, left with no choice, Bayless stopped the fight. But the move failed to restrain Gotti III, who lunged at Mayweather Jr. Within no time, team members dived into the ring. Then it was free for all. Apparently, separate fights broke out in different parts of the venue, including the backstage area.

As a result of his conduct, John Gotti’s grandson received disqualification. Or, perhaps, the hints were already apparent.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. John Gotti III: Signs were conspicuous

Last year, while speaking with Ariel Helwani on the ‘MMA Hour, John Gotti III replied, “We’re in talks right now,” when asked about the rematch. “Actually to to do something so we’ll see where it goes. You know, from what I understood after the fight, it was the most Google thing in the whole world, so Floyd’s a businessman. Floyd wants to capitalize on that, and he wants to make money, so listen, if they want to do it again, I’m here,” he said.

He also clarified that whatever happened in the ring and thereafter happened in the heat of the moment. There was nothing personal against ‘The Money’. “I said he was my enemy for life out of anger, but he’s not my enemy,” said John Gotti III. It remains to be seen how fans take up the news. May be Mayweather Jr. and Gotti III would finally be able to piece together a good story, with a satisfactory ending, of course.
