

2024 was a landmark year for women’s boxing. From record-breaking fights to emerging stars to the first all-female main event Pay-Per-View, this year had it all for women’s boxing. Female boxers garnered more sponsorship deals and media coverage than ever before, somewhat closing the gap between men’s and women’s boxing in terms of coverage and earnings.
It won’t be wrong to say that 2024 was a kind of crowning moment for Women’s boxing and it happened because of a few matches that completely changed the landscape for every female associated with this sport. These matches not only opened new doors for every active boxer but also inspired the next generation to pick up the gloves. Let’s take a look.

Amanda Serrano vs. Katie Taylor
You know you have done wonders when even the likes of Jake Paul and Mike Tyson can’t steal your thunder. Quite possibly the biggest women’s fight of the year, which broke the global viewership record with over 50 million viewers tuning in to witness the rematch. Furthermore, this fight also marked one of the largest attendances for a women’s boxing match as a sold-out crowd of 72,000 fans witnessed it live in AT&T Stadium.

Katie Taylor reportedly earned $6.1 million for the rematch, setting a record for the highest purse in women’s boxing. While Amanda Serrano did not reveal her exact purse, she claimed that her earnings far exceeded Taylor’s. Coming to the action, both of these fighters tore the house down for all 10 rounds. With both fighters bleeding by the end, Katie Taylor edges past Serrano in a rather controversial decision making it 2-0 in her favour. However, the duo has agreed to a trilogy fight which will be 12X3 rounds and fans are desperately waiting for that fight.
Gabriela Fundora vs. Gabriela Celeste Alaniz
No one owned 2024 in a more dominating fashion than Gabriela Fundora. On November 2, 2024, The Sporting News 2024 Women’s Fighter of the Year defeated Gabriela Celeste Alaniz via a seventh-round stoppage to become the youngest undisputed flyweight champion in the modern era at just 22 years of age.

It was a dominating performance by ‘Sweet Poison’ who continued her undefeated streak and overcame a far more experienced Alaniz. Fundora had to come from behind after suffering a huge blow in the third round. But after that, she showed her elite skills and Alaniz had no answer. The high turnout at the Virgin Hotels in Las Vegas erupted with joy as Gabriela Fundora knocked down Alainz twice in the seventh round to create history.
Claressa Shields vs. Vanessa Lepage-Joanisse
It took Claressa Shields less than 4 minutes to add a world title in her fourth division when she knocked out Vanessa Lepage-Joanisse in the second round on July 27, 2024. It was Shields’ first KO victory since 2017 and she described it as her best knockout yet. The sold-out star-studded crowd at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit was left stunned as ‘T-Rex’ did not even break a sweat to solidify her legacy as the best pound-for-pound women’s boxer.

Shields’ speed was too much for Joanisse in her first WBC heavyweight title defense, who was dropped three times in just two rounds. Furthermore, the 15-0 boxer also captured the vacant WBO light heavyweight title. With Claressa Shields scheduled to fight against Danielle Perkins in February 2025, fans are expecting to see similar fireworks.
Chantelle Cameron vs. Elhem Mekhaled
Things were looking rather dim for Chantelle Cameron as she faced her career’s first defeat and lost her undisputed super lightweight championship against Katie Taylor in November 2023. It was a heartbreaking result as she had vanquished Taylor earlier in May 2023. However, after the loss, 2024 was like a blank slate for her where she had to start from the bottom.
The Northampton native did not disappoint as she dominated Elhem Mekhaled to capture the WBC Interim Super Lightweight Title. Cameron won the fight via a majority decision of 98-92, 99-92, and 95-95 and announced that she was coming back for her titles. The 10-round fight became a test of skill against durability as Mekhaled did not back down at all. She took the fight to Cameron to give the fans at Resorts World Arena, Birmingham, a spectacle that they would never forget.
Natasha Jonas vs. Ivana Habazin
Fans of women’s boxing could not have asked for a better fight to close out 2024. On December 14, 2024, at the Exhibition Centre in Liverpool, Natasha Jonas and Ivana Habazin went for 10 straight rounds to determine the new WBC and IBF welterweight champion.

In what might be Jonas’ last fight in her hometown as the 40-year-old gets closer to retirement, she stole the show. In a hard-fought battle, the Liverpool native emerged victorious via a unanimous decision with scores of 100-90, 99-92, and 99-91. Jonas was joined by IBF welterweight champion Lauren Price, and the duo agreed to a title unification bout, making the fans excited for 2025. If Jonas loses that fight, we might see her finally hanging up her gloves for good, increasing the stakes.
