From a 107-year-old grandfather (actually a 70-year-old man) to world champions, it seems there’s hardly anyone who hasn’t challenged Jake Paul to a fight. Another name may join the list—boxing legend Roy Jones Jr. The former world champion seems willing to exchange blows with Paul. But his motivations appear to be more about testing boxing abilities.

Jones Jr. wants to check whether Paul has it in him to fend off a bona fide attack. On November 15, in front of over seventy thousand spectators and millions more watching on Netflix at the famous Cowboys Stadium, Jake Paul defeated 58-year-old Mike Tyson unanimously in a special rules bout.

As it happened during the lead-up, the fight faced a fair share of criticism afterward. Nevertheless, when it boils down to promotions, the event established Paul as boxing’s biggest money spinner. Hence leading to a flurry of challenges from several corners.

Roy Jones was speaking with TMZ. The reporter asked whether he had seen the Jake Paul-Mike Tyson match. Especially whether it sparked any desire to return to the ring. It’s been a few years since Roy Jones Jr. last fought. He faced Anthony Pettis last year, his 76th professional match. However, Jones Jr.’s last exhibition match took place four years ago. On November 28, 2020, he and ‘Iron’ Mike stepped into the ring for an eight-round fight. Jake Paul fought on the undercard of the event at the Staples Center.

‘The Superman’ admitted, “It makes you want to just go in and at least just test Jake Paul’s chin, you know.” While he acknowledged that Jake Paul has a good punch and is capable of knocking anyone out, Jones Jr. felt that Mike Tyson somehow couldn’t really test Paul.

He added, “So I wouldn’t mind just having a shot to see if I could get to his chin to test his chin if he can take the shot cool or if he can catch me before I get to his chin cool, but I would definitely like a shot to get in there and shoot at his chin, you know.

Roy Jones Jr. felt that Mike Tyson may not have performed at his best on fight night.

What’s your perspective on:

Can Roy Jones Jr. expose Jake Paul as a mere showman, or is Paul the real deal?

Roy Jones Jr. reflects on Mike Tyson’s performance

A key indicator, he argued, was that Tyson’s legs didn’t look right from the first round. Given his vast experience in the sport, Jones Jr. is well-positioned to identify when a fighter is struggling. The condition of a fighter’s legs is often a key sign of trouble. In comparison, Tyson performed much better in his previous fight—the one against Jones himself.

At the Paul-Tyson event, Jones Jr. joined Oscar-nominated actress Rosie Perez and Mauro Ranallo in the commentary booth as ringside analysts. Being so close to the action, he likely had a chance to see where the former heavyweight champion struggled. He told the TMZ reporter that he felt he could take advantage of Jake Paul’s weaknesses.

Regarding a potential fight with Roy Jones Jr., it may be some time before fans hear a response from Jake Paul. In the meantime, the boxing legend is staying busy. On December 12, he returns to the ring—not as a fighter, but as a promoter. At the Legends Casino Hotel in Washington, five of his fighters will compete on a single card. A first for a head trainer, it seems.

What’s your take? Do you think Roy Jones Jr. would pose a tougher challenge for Jake Paul?
