Shakur Stevenson‘s career trajectory needs a revamp. After delivering two boring back-to-back performances against Edwin De Los Santos, and Artem Harutyunyan, the WBC lightweight champion needs an opponent who can bring out the best in him. A boxer with a polar opposite fighting style has decided to step up. The most explosive fighter in the lightweight division, WBA champion Gervonta Davis, is willing to give the three-division champion a chance to prove himself inside the ring.
On that note, Stevenson claimed in a recent interview with Boxing News that Gervonta’s team has been in touch with him to make the fight happen. “Like I said, that fight is going to happen. I’m not going to act like the fight is not going to happen. Me and [Davis] are the best fighters coming up. The best fighters in 135-pound division, there’s no way the fight doesn’t happen,” Stevenson said. So, it is not a matter of if but when. After all, Davis should also be looking forward to this bout as he has the chance to unify the lightweight titles.
So, has a fight offer been floated by any of the teams? Well, Shakur Stevenson sat down for an interview with Cigar Talk to discuss the status of the negotiations with Gervonta Davis. When the interviewer remarked, “People make it seem like there was an offer on the table”, Shakur interjected and said, ” I never got one offer. No offer, nothing.”

Not surprising. Good content right here from Naji and shout out to Hassan for reposting this. Shakur wasn’t a part of the plan for Tank Davis and anyone who’s unbiased knows it. PBC/TGB and Leonard Ellerbe already have in mind who Tank was going to fight and Shakur was not it. https://t.co/1WJ7khCD02

“That’s what people make it seem like but I am saying like we speaking the truth. Let’s speak the facts,” he added bluntly. Stevenson reiterated that the initial contact was made by Gervonta Davis’ team, but thereafter negotiations stalled. While the fight seems interesting, there is also one crucial reason for Davis to avoid a fight with Stevenson.
Shakur has been criticized heavily for his gun-shy performances. During his last fight against Harutyunyan, he was booed by his hometown fans at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. Some fans have been spotted leaving the venue during championship rounds. Therefore, judging by his current status, Stevenson isn’t a major PPV attraction. It just might be that Stevenson needs a couple of more tune-up fights to showcase his explosiveness, and then maybe a fight with Davis will be on the cards for him. That being said, will we see Shakur Stevenson back in the ring again this year to redeem his lackluster performance against Harutyunyan in July this year?

A sudden mishap!
In a blow to boxing fans, Shakur Stevenson will be sidelined for the rest of the year, forcing him to pull out of his highly anticipated bout with Joe Cordina. The fight, which was set to be the co-main event on the stacked October 12 card headlined by the undisputed clash between Dmitry Bivol and Artur Beterbiev, would’ve been a thrilling showdown. But an injury in a recent sparring session derailed those plans.
The 27-year-old Stevenson, widely regarded as one of the brightest stars in boxing, injured his right hand severely enough to require surgery, ruling him out for the remainder of the year. Stevenson took to X to express his disappointment, writing, “Unfortunately, my hand gave out on me, but in 2025 let’s bounce back and take over boxing.”

The Newark native had just inked a two-fight deal with Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing and was looking to silence critics with a dominant performance against Cordina. Instead, the injury has put his momentum on pause—but Stevenson’s hunger and determination remain unchanged.
As we look ahead, the question on everyone’s mind is: will Shakur Stevenson finally face off against Gervonta Davis next year? With both fighters on the rise, that potential bout could be the blockbuster showdown boxing needs. Let us know what you think in the comments below!
