When it comes to a potential matchup that’s both intriguing and exciting, everyone would want to see it happen. But whether it will ever come to fruition is another matter. The problem is, in boxing, the line between a rumor and reality is often blurred. Often these rumors fade away on their own. Sometimes, they’re just illusory clouds. As of now, no one knows if that’s the case with the Devin Haney–Teofimo Lopez prospective lineup.
Certain reports suggested Devin Haney was looking into the possibility of fighting Teofimo Lopez. However, in the latest interview, ‘The Takeover’ made it clear that it is what it is: just rumors. The light welterweight champion, who defended his title for this second time on June 29, had been making headlines for his spat—both live and online—with Terence Crawford. He seems eager to take his career to the next level. Hence, a big fight makes for a compelling argument. The same is true for Haney as well. He has been out of the ring since the Ryan Garcia fight. Now he’s looking to make a high-impact return.

Teofimo Lopez: Don’t jump the gun
The details appeared during Teofimo Lopez’s conversation with Eli Seckbach. It seems the pair caught up at Miami’s Club 11, where ‘Magic City Fight Night’ took place. One of the showstoppers was the comeback bout of legend Guillermo Rigondeaux.

“Obviously it’s a rumor that you’re fighting Haney—Forbes magazine,” said Seckbach and further asserted, “I mean, it’s a rumor; no one approached you, no one asked you.” Negative, responded ‘The Takeover’. He confirmed that no one has contacted him regarding the Haney fight thus far.
Like many fans, the sports reporter also emphasized that Teofimo Lopez is not one to back off from a fight. The light welterweight champion added, “This could happen, but right now we haven’t had any contracts sent to us. We don’t know what’s going on, but hey, they want to keep the rumors.”
Citing information received from a source, the story on Forbes shared that Devin Haney could be in talks to fight Teofimo Lopez. It would be his comeback fight. Though details such as fight date and purse were not available, it was suggested that their match would be one of 2025’s biggest headliners. ESPN would broadcast the event, promoted by Bob Arum‘s Top Rank.

What’s your perspective on:
Is the Haney vs. Lopez fight just hype, or will it redefine the light welterweight division?
Have an interesting take?
It’s a compelling pairing; otherwise
So it’s back to square one. Nevertheless, it will be a fight that all boxing fans would love watching. Two of the biggest stars from the lower divisions joining for dance is a dream come true for many. Despite hogging the limelight in the 135 pounds, the two never entered a fight. Last year, both moved up to the light welterweight division together. So at least now a match could be made. As Bill Haney once labeled it, it’s a ‘grudge match’ against Lopez.

Having twice defeated George Kambosos Jr., who inflicted Teofimo Lopez’s lone loss, Devin Haney might have an edge. However, stylistically, it would be a clash of two technicians, not heavy on power punches, engaging in a twelve-round tactical battle.
