When you look at Devin Haney, there is one stat that he is proud of. His undefeated record. In his 32-fight-long career, he has stood tall every time he entered the boxing ring. But he did lose the Ryan Garcia fight. However, that one loss in his record column didn’t remain for long. He is again undefeated on the record after the fight was overturned to a no-contest. However, is he really undefeated?

An unsettling rumor pops up every once in a while—that Bill Haney splashed some cash in the initial years of his son’s professional career and had one of his losses wiped off his record. An X handle ‘Team RHC’ also claimed yesterday that the former undisputed lightweight champion had recorded a loss against Hector Garcia Montes. How true is the rumor? While this rumor has been circulating for years, it has gained attention, especially among Haney’s rivals in the boxing world.

‘Rolly’ Romero was the first one to bank on those rumors and ride the wave. It didn’t help Devin, 26, as Regis Prograis also raised the same questions when they were about to clash inside the boxing ring with the WBC super lightweight title on the line last year. ‘Rougarou’ wrote in a series of tweets, “So I’m hearing Devin lost a fight in Mexico earlier in his career, but he paid to take it off his record. IF that’s true that’s the weakest s*** I ever heard so far in boxing.”

The TalkSports also touched upon the same controversy and detailed how ‘The Dream’s early fights took place in Mexico. The British media outlet pointed out that Haney, at 31-0, was not allowed to fight in the American states. Why? It was because of his young age. What’s more? All of these early fights happened under little or no spotlight in Tijuana hotels and bars. However, solid evidence to support claims of a cover-up remains elusive. The California native himself has addressed the situation many times.

Devin Haney has been vocal in dismissing these rumors. Responding to Prograis on X, he wrote, “Only a dumba*s would believe some s*** like that. This info is coming from Rolly Romero, that should tell you enough.”

Therefore, the answer is clear from Devin Haney, at least. These rumors are baseless and have no solid basis, according to him. But Prograis admitted never talking to Romero. Instead, he claimed many people were aware of his little secret. But could it really be the case? It’s difficult to say and ascertain the truth as of now. But you could take these speculations with a pinch of salt before jumping the gun.
