Award-winning trainer Derrick James’ inopportune interruption received instant feedback from Terence Crawford. However, Teofimo Lopez had to wait for the responses from the fans. When James, during the kick-off press conference for the Crawford-Spence Jr. fight, said that Lopez became the undisputed champion in two weight classes, the recently crowned WBO Super Lightweight champion accepted new-found recognition with glee. But it appears fans had other ideas in their minds.

Taking up Jake Donovan (@JakeNDaBox) ‘s feed on the Crawford and James discussion, ‘The Takeover’ wrote, “Don’t be that kind of groupie Jake Donovan. How can someone call themselves REAL when expressing false information? Derrick James is correct! I am the FIRST male to do it, hahaha. @ErrolSpenceJr, this is why I am content with retiring from this new era of Mediocre Boxing.” However, once the other followers started sharing their pointers, quite a few were scathing in their assessment.

One Twitter user has a straightforward question. He wants to know if this is a mediocre era for boxing as Lopez contemplates, then how come he has a loss registered in his record. If ‘The Takeover’ was outstanding, he shouldn’t have lost the 2021 battle to George Kambosos Jr. The user says that it’s high time Lopez should refrain from telling lies. Every time he says something, it complicates the matter further or raises the alarm.

The following user highlights where Lopez has gone wrong. First, when he defeated Vasiliy Lomachenko in 2020, despite his outstanding show, he was still bereft of the WBC belt that Devin Haney held in the 135 lbs. Thus he could never become the undisputed champion in Lightweight. Secondly, even during the recent Josh Taylor fight in the 140 lbs., the Scotsman had already parted with three of his belts and retained only two, WBO and The Ring. This means the Super Lightweight division has other belt holders denying him the undisputed status. The only action for Teofimo Lopez would be to beat other titleholders. Then he can retire as an undisputed champion sans any controversy.

One user also toed a similar line. He highlighted that Josh Taylor had only one belt at the time of their bout on June 10. Likewise, Devin Haney was the WBC champion of the Lightweight division. Hence, Lopez could never claim to be an undisputed champion by any measure. But the user, however, appreciates the young boxer for his prowess in the sport.

A user named Rob also commended Teofimo Lopez for his outstanding boxing skills but mentioned that his only belt is the WBO title in 140 lbs. Hence, doesn’t qualify him as an undisputed champion in the current four-belt era.

Bringing his father’s recent statement into reference, one user mentioned how Teofimo Lopez Sr. wants Errol Spence Jr. to win since he doesn’t want to see Terence Crawford as the undisputed champion in two divisions. Secondly, the win over Josh Taylor fetched him the WBO and The Ring belts. Hence it doesn’t make him the undisputed champion by any stretch of thought. The lineal championship shouldn’t be confused with the undisputed one, he said.

Teofimo Lopez became a unified champion in the Lightweight division when he defeated Lomachenko. He couldn’t become an undisputed champion since Haney held the WBC title concurrently. After the loss to Kambosos Jr., he moved to Super Lightweight. However, by the time he met Josh Taylor, the latter had also relinquished all except the WBO title.
