Twenty-eight years old Gervonta Davis has yet to face a defeat in his decade-long career. The Baltimorean, who has won 93% of his matches through early stoppages, reportedly started boxing when he was five. The vagaries of life contrived the youngster to find some solace through boxing. So he decided to quit schooling to focus more on the sport.

Davis has had an outstanding stint as an amateur boxer like his archrival Ryan Garcia. His record before he turned professional stood at two hundred and six wins against only fifteen losses. His accomplishments during the phase include winning the 2012 National Golden Gloves Championship and National Silver Gloves Championship three consecutive times. Additionally, he won the National Police Athletic League and Ringside World Championships twice, besides the two gold medals he won at the National Junior Olympics.

Would it be difficult to fathom that a boxer with such a stellar record, becoming one of boxing’s biggest crowd-puller and money spinners, could have ever been beaten? Few sources indicate that the Southpaw switch-hitter could have had those rare moments when someone got the better of him. So who was the boxer who attained such a feat?

Who is Joet Gonzalez, the nightmare of Gervonta Davis in his amateur career?

Joet Gonzalez handed over two defeats to Gervonta Davis during their amateur days. The orthodox boxer, now twenty-nine, was born in Glendora, California. Now a resident of Los Angeles, the five feet and six inches tall Joet De Jesus Gonzalez, was barely twelve when he debuted as an amateur boxer against Saul Rodriguez on February 27, 2005.

According to the records maintained by BoxRec, he had participated in twenty-seven bouts, winning nineteen and losing the remaining eight. Then, roughly five years after his amateur debut, Gonzalez came across Gervonta Davis. It was the semi-finals of the 2010 USA Junior National Championships. The bout, which took place on June 17, 2010, at The Field House in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, was fought at Bantamweight. Davis lost the match via points.

The duo was to meet two years later in Fort Carson, Colorado’s Fort Carson Special Events Center, on February 28, 2012. The outcome was similar to the previous meet, and the Featherweight contest match ended up in the Californian’s favor. By July of that year, Gonzalez debuted as a professional against Jesus Carmona in Costa Mesa, California’s The Hangar.

Joet Gonzalez vs. Gervonta Davis: Did they meet in their professional career?

The February fight in 2012 was the last time Joet Gonzalez and Gervonta Davis ever met. The former, who now fights in the Super Bantamweight and Featherweight divisions, is yet to cross the path with the Baltimorean southpaw as a professional boxer. However, six years after his debut, Gonzalez won his first title, the vacant WBO-NABO Featherweight, on July 13, 2018.

What is Joet Gonzalez doing now?

A year later, on October 26, 2019, Joet Gonzalez faced Shakur Stevenson in Reno, Nevada’s Reno-Sparks Convention Center. Their clash was meant to determine the WBO Featherweight champion. The twelve-round match ended with a unanimous victory for Stevenson. It was the first professional defeat for Gonzalez. He managed to ace a win the next year and took home the vacant WBO Inter-Continental featherweight title. But another attempt at the WBO’s Featherweight title against Emanuel Navarrete on October 15, 2021, proved disastrous.

Last year, he defeated Jeo Santisima on March 4 at Save Mart Center in Fresno, California. The win enabled him to add the WBO International Featherweight title to his kitty. Unfortunately, his seesawing fortune that began in 2019 continued. Four months later, the Ghanaian-British boxer Isaac Dogboe handed Gonzalez his third defeat on July 23 at Grand Casino in Hinckley, Minnesota.
