Chris Eubank Jr. calling promoters 'scumbags'—is he right, or just stirring the pot?

Chris Eubank Jr. will be back in action after a hiatus of one year. In his last fight in September, he redeemed his knockout loss against Liam Smith, winning the rematch via a stoppage. In his upcoming bout, he will be facing Kamil Szeremeta for the IBO middleweight world championship on the Artur Beterbiev vs. Dmitry Bivol undercard on October 12. Furthermore, Eubank Jr. cut ties with his former promoter Kalle Sauerland, and his company Wasserman Boxing this year and joined hands with the UK’s youngest licensed promoter Ben Shalom, and his promotion company Boxxer.

When asked about the reason behind changing promoters at the press conference for his upcoming fight event, Eubank Jr. sounded off on almost all the renowned promoters in the UK boxing scene. “Why BOXXER? Because every other promoter out here is a scumbag,” the British boxer said with a hint of frustration in his voice. Continuing his rant, he first set his sights on Queensberry Promotions’ Frank Warren who was present at the event.

“We have Frank Warren behind me, he has been lying and cheating his way through boxing for the last few decades. He sued me for a couple of hundred thousand a few years ago so obviously I’d never go with him. Scumbag,” he said calmly. Notably, Warren reportedly sued Eubank Jr. after he withdrew from his 2016 title clash with Tommy Langford which clearly left a bitter taste in Warren’s mouth.

Thereafter, directing his anger towards Matchroom Sport chairman Eddie Hearn, he said, “Scumbags Eddie Hearn and Frank Smith did everything to try and make this fight against Conor Benn still go ahead after knowing that he was on the steroids.” Chris Eubank Jr.’s grouse with Hearn stems from the fact that he promotes rival fighter Conor Benn. Both fighters were supposed to fight in 2022 but it was eventually scrapped after Benn failed a drug test.

Last but not least, he accused his former promoter Kalle Sauerland of keeping him in a “terrible contract” for several years. However, he did spare one matchmaker abuse and waxed lyrical about him instead. After all, he will be fighting on a fight card produced by Riyadh season.

Chris Eubank Jr. calling promoters 'scumbags'—is he right, or just stirring the pot?

Have an interesting take?

It seems that HE Turki Alalshikh has jumped the gun in Chris Eubank’s latest verbal onslaught. The Saudi Arabian adviser at the Royal Court is the hottest matchmaker in town delivering the best matchups at a fair price. Moreover, he seems to be in most fighters’ good books and has brought many rival promoters under one roof, to uplift the boxing scene.

Praising Alalshikh, Eubank Jr. said, “All scumbags. The only one who isn’t is [Saudi boxing chief] Turki Alalshikh. This is a man who isn’t trying to take money for fighters, and use lawyers and accountants in slave contracts.”

With his new promoter Ben Shalom, Eubank Jr. is aiming to land fights with the biggest names in boxing like Canelo Álvarez, Terence Crawford, and Ben Whittaker. “He has to fight for a world title in his next fight and I completely agree. And we will do absolutely everything to make that happen so unless it is one of the big names where it is ridiculous money, because that is what comes with Chris Eubank Jr, then it has to be a world title,” Shalom had told the media after signing Eubank to his company.

Nevertheless, it remains to be seen if Chris Eubank Jr. will get to fight any of the big names after he angered boxing promoters in general with his latest comments. Who should Chris Eubank Jr. fight next? Let us know in the comment section below.
