On ‘The FIGHT with Teddy Atlas’, Jim Gray said there was a lot going on before that incident. He remembered seeing a huge gash on top of the left eye of Tyson which Holyfield caused by head-butting him. This led to ‘Iron Mike’ reacting by biting ‘Holyfield. Gray said, “And, you know, you’ve seen everything in boxing. Holyfield bit of guy’s ear before. Holyfield bit somebody in the Olympic trials.”
The Hall of Famer added, “So, Holyfield… you know, for as much as he was jumping around and everything, had to understand it because… and in recent, more recent memory, more recent years, he said, ‘Yes’, he did. You know, he had bitten somebody before.”
He suggested that though it may have been illegal and worthy of a disqualification; it was not such a scandal, especially to Holyfield himself.
