Mia St. John has had a tumultuous life journey. Although the former Welterweight champion thrived in her boxing career, personal hardships continuously besieged her. Her life, despite reaching the pinnacle of success, was riddled with numerous issues. Nevertheless, Mia remained resolute and steadfast in confronting these challenges. Her separation from her former husband, the ex-actor Kristoff St. John, in 1995 marked a significant turning point in her life.

However, the most tragic blow struck when her son, Julian St. John, tragically took his own life in 2014. As she embarked on an arduous journey of healing from this devastating loss, another incident took place that once again shook her to the core. Her beloved daughter ended up suffering a public mental health episode, after which the St. John family got her the medical health she needed. Here’s what Mia St. John revealed in an ES exclusive interview with Noah Lack about her condition as of now.

When the incident took place, Mia St. John shared her despair about the situation on social media. She had shared her worry about potentially losing another child, as her daughter was hospitalized. However, it seems that things are now better as she recently even provided a health update stating that her daughter is “recovering & making progress.” Recently, while in a conversation with Noah Lack for EssentiallySports, St. John was asked about her daughters’ present condition.

In response, she stated candidly, “You know, thankfully, my daughter had her episode in the state of Idaho. California, which is her home is- we have the worst mental health care- I wanna say in the country. I don’t know about other states, but I know California sucks for mental health care. Don’t get sick in California. If you get mentally sick, you can get in an involuntary hold, which is a 5150, but they are going to release you most likely the very next day.”

The boxing legend went on to praise the state of Idaho for all the care her daughter received there. She added that, unlike California, they held on to her for two months before they let her go. She shared her surprise at this stating, “And it’s crazy ‘cause Idaho is a republican state, California is- we’re Democrats here in California. So Idaho is the last place I thought would care for my child. Ironically, it turned out to be the best place.” Just recently, she also spoke about her grief of losing her son and ex-partner as well.

Boxing legend opens up about losing her son and ex-husband

During her appearance on the Tamron Hall Show, St. John openly discussed her life following the tragic loss of her son and ex-husband. She expressed the immense void in her life, stating, “It’s [half her family] missing. It’s like part of our hearts are gone, you know?” She shared how her daughter, Paris, has been a constant source of support during these challenging times, especially considering their shared struggles with mental health.

She emphasized, “And she’s always there for me. You know? Supportive, and been strong and you know we help each other through our days.” Their son, Julian St. John, faced a tumultuous journey marked by the emergence of mental health issues. Julian’s battle with depression and schizophrenia led to his admission to a facility where, tragically, in 2014, the family’s worst fears were realized when news broke that Julian had taken his own life. Mia St. John later revealed that the mental health facility wasn’t giving her son his medications and that they were “falsifying records.”

In the end, the boxing legend managed to win the lawsuit. However, the loss had been too great. As things start to look good for Mia and the rest of the St. John family once again, we continue to hope that they only see brighter days ahead.
