Former unified welterweight champion Errol Spence Jr. can’t seem to catch a break. The Long Island native was previously linked to a title fight against WBC and WBO super welterweight champion Sebastian Fundora. However, the fight is officially dead now. Errol’s Response? “I’ll be back when I’m ready,” he said in his defense when a fan asked him for his comeback. Spence had it coming though. Didn’t he? Why would Fundora fight someone who is coming off a one-sided loss, has not fought at 154lbs ever, and has not fought AT ALL in the last 19 months? However, this wasn’t the end of the bad news for Spence Jr.

Fundora, on the other hand, WBO no. 2 Charles Conwell is willing to welcome Fundora back to the ring. Terence Crawford, by whom Spence lost in his last fight in July 2023, was lined up to fight Fundora but the WBO super welterweight champion is said to be chasing Canelo. Woahhh!

Meanwhile, ‘The Truth’ now seems to have been booted from WBC’s top 15 rankings at 154 lbs. More than a month ago, WBC had named Errol Spence Jr their No.1 contender at junior middleweight. But it seems since the title fight could not happen, there was no reason for him to remain in the top 10 ranking given that he hasn’t fought in the weight division since 2015. With his removal, Serhii Bohachuk has now been moved up to No.1. However, that doesn’t guarantee Bohachuk a shot at the title since Vergil Ortiz Jr. already holds the Interim WBC title.

Spence’s last fight against Crawford was a one-sided beatdown. Spence lost the fight via 9th-round stoppage, and things haven’t been the same for him since then. The now-canceled Fundora fight itself saw multiple delays before it was scrapped entirely. There are a lot of speculations about his retirement as well. With no potential fight on the horizon, many believe that ‘The Truth’ may never dance in the ring ever again.

However, Spence himself has denied the retirement claims, suggesting fans may get to see him again after all. However, the question is, what exactly is going on behind the scenes with Errol Spence Jr?

How did things get worse from bad for Errol Spence Jr?

Before being removed from the rankings, last month, the WBO revealed that they wouldn’t even consider Spence Jr. their champion if he had defeated Fundora. Why? Well, they suggested that Spence was coming off a brutal and devastating loss. To top it off, he hadn’t fought in the 154-pound division since 2015 and never even made it to their top 15 in the division. Hence WBO refused to sanction the fight against their champion.

Spence was facing issues for a while. The Texas resident separated from his long-time trainer Derrick James not too long ago. And they have since sued each other over Derrick’s payment, which the trainer claims wasn’t paid out to him. Not to forget, Spence remains traumatized from his car accident in 2019. 

“I definitely worry about [brain trauma], have checkups all the time and always … get scans and all type of stuff just to make sure I’m on point,” Spence told Boxing Scene. “Not too many people go high speed in a Ferrari and get thrown, land on solid concrete and still be here to talk today, still survive, still be coherent.”

That said, whether he wants to accept it or not, Spence’s future in the sport is looking increasingly uncertain. At this rate, Errol Spence Jr. risks fading into obscurity as the boxing world shifts its focus to the next big attraction. What do you think Spence should do next?
