Errol Spence Jr., who is likely to face Keith Thurman in April 2023, recently shared a forgotten video of Jay-Z breaking down the famous ‘Most Kingz’ verse. In the video, Jay-Z spoke about changes in life as one reached the pinnacle of their career attaining the financial security and social respect that one most desires throughout their life. However, responsibilities and new challenges follow, and as per Jay-Z, in a statement in itself, unfortunately, “most kings get their heads cut off“.
To quote fellow American poet Emily Dickinson, “Fame is a bee. It has a sting – “. This opinion is quite synonymous with the views advanced by Jay-Z. Although with material success comes recognition, Jay-Z feels the same leads to an individual being treated differently by those the closest to her/him. However, the co-founder of Roc-A-Fella Records stressed the need to change through labor and over time.

In this decade-old video that Spence Jr. shared in one of his Instagram stories, Jay-Z rhymed a few lines from the said verse. With smooth rhyming conveyed through the words “inspired”, “fire”, and “tired” Jay-Z expressed how he conquered the industry but the same broke him down deliberately introducing new challenges to his fatigued life. In an apostrophe, he addressed artist Jean-Michel Basquiat while at the same time highlighting the exploitation his labor suffered producing art. “Inspired by Basquiat, my chariot’s on fire. Everybody took shots, hit my body up, I’m tired“, rhymed Jay-Z.

The multiple-time Grammy-winning artist shed light on the excruciating and cyclical process. The process that looks forward to embracing growth only to torment the same with the infliction of pain. “Build me up to break me down to build me up again. They like, ‘Hov’, we need you back so we can kill your a*s again“, he added rhyming. It is a pity when loved ones fail to recognize the unchangeable force that propelled the very journey.
“People change around you because they treat you different because of your success”, thus Jay-Z lamented saying. However, one needs to change if it means attaining financial security or developing oneself as a more productive individual in society.
