The fight between Errol Spence Jr. and Sebastian Fundora will not be happening. It follows the cryptic message from Spence Jr. expressing his thoughts on the current state of boxing. The tweet may have led some to speculate that the former unified welterweight champion may be done with the sport.
Last year also, Spence posted a puzzling message that hinted at potential retirement. However, despite the setback with the Fundora fight, it seems ‘The Truth’ may not be ready to walk away just yet. Following reports that the fight—originally intended for last October and later moved to March 29—fell through, Spence Jr. took to social media to share an update. Spence Jr. hasn’t fought since his July 2023 loss to Terence Crawford. While he activated the rematch clause, the fight never materialized. Last year, he also underwent eye surgery and moved up to the 154-pound division. Later, talks of a fight with Fundora surfaced.

Errol Spence Jr.: I’m not stepping away just yet!
“I’ll be back when I’m ready,” Spence Jr. commented in response to a fan eager to see him return to the ring. After Mike Coppinger‘s initial report, WBO President Gustavo Olivieri also shared reasons for not sanctioning the Fundora-Spence Jr. matchup.

Many fans’ apprehensions trace back to a statement Errol Spence Jr. made last year. As reports of a potential fight with Sebastian Fundora began to circulate, Spence shared a cryptic message: “Might be the last time you see me.” This left many wondering if the former world champion was hinting at retirement.
The Fundora match was initially scheduled for October. But around the same time, complications arose when the WBO directed their interim titleholder, Terence Crawford, and Fundora to prepare for a fight. The two parties were given until October 10 to finalize an agreement; otherwise, the matter would proceed to purse bids.
Unfortunately, that possibility fell through, and attention shifted back to Spence Jr. Later, reports surfaced suggesting a potential fight could happen by March 29.

Through Uncertainty and Aspiration
At the start of the new year, an unexpected development occurred. A parody account impersonating talkSPORT’s former online editor, Michael Benson, posted, “The former unified champ, Errol Spence Jr., has sadly announced his retirement at the age of 34 years old after sustaining another injury to his eye in training. We wish Errol all the best.” Given Spence Jr.’s health concerns and long absence from the ring, the rumor seemingly gained traction. However, before the speculation could spiral further, Spence Jr. intervened.

Using his Instagram Story, the Houston native urged followers not to believe such rumors unless they came directly from him, saying, “If it’s not from me.” As of now, Errol Spence Jr. remains the number one contender in the WBC light middleweight rankings. Technically, Spence Jr. could challenge Vergil Ortiz Jr., the interim titleholder. Defeating his fellow Texan could set the stage for another matchup with Fundora. However, there’s a catch: the growing time gap since his last fight may impact his ability to draw crowds. As a result, his team is likely to act quickly to get him back in the ring.
