Although Errol Spence Jr. announced that he “agreed to the weight [147],” ‘The Truth’ hoped his rematch with Terence Crawford would take place at 154. Likewise, a number of people claimed that Spence Jr. looked “weight-drained” against ‘Bud’ at 147. Recently, in an interview with InsideFighting, Spence Jr.’s trainer Derrick James even declared that ‘The Truth’ would be victorious in their rematch if it took place at a “different weight“.
In the wake of the above statements, Brian McIntyre, trainer of Terence Crawford branded the weight-drain theory an excuse. In his opinion, if Spence Jr. was weight-drained at all at 147, then Derrick James’ coaching is to be blamed. Along these lines, ‘BoMac’ pointed out that both parties had the right and equal amount of time for this event.

Recently, Derrick James declared that Spence Jr. looked “very off” to him that night against ‘Bud’. Some believed he was actually weight-drained. For example, Chris Williams wrote, “Spence was successful in getting down to 147 for the weigh-in, but he looked like a living corpse on the night of the fight“. Well, as per McIntyre, this is just an excuse. As per his statements, Spence Jr. “had to weigh in the same weight as Bud” and he “knew about the fight months before“.

“So, I mean, if he was weight-drained, that’s just bad coaching on Derrick James’ part,” McIntyre added. In this connection, he pointed out that Spence Jr. and Crawford had sufficient time to prepare for the fight. “We all had the right amount of time to prepare for this fight,” he said. Likewise, McIntyre declared that he wasn’t looking for any excuses. “I’m not looking for no excuses or anything of that nature. Errol had no excuses; everybody else did,” he concluded.
