Can Conor Benn ever shake off the 'most hated' label and win back the fans' respect?

Living up to your father’s name can be tough. It gets 100 times harder when your father is the great Nigel Benn, one of the most charismatic fighters the world has ever seen. Conor Benn has been suffering the same feat for many years now. He constantly tries to match his father’s legacy, but is that even possible?

Especially after failing two drug tests that withheld the fight against Chris Eubank Jr. in 2022, Benn has fallen in fans’ eyes. No matter what he does at this point, people constantly criticize him, and he might be one of the most hated boxers in the UK currently. The same thing happened when he got into a friendly duke out with former British heavyweight champion Derek Chisora, as fans ripped him apart completely.

The backlash started with the video posted by IFL TV Boxing on Instagram. The video featured Derek Chisora challenging Destroyer’s security and stating, “My security will SMASH UP your security,” in a game of rock-paper-scissors. It was all fun and games, as Benn accepted the challenge in a heartbeat.

He stated, ” No Chance!,” before raising the stakes as he asked Chisora, “What You Wanna Bet On It?” The pair agreed on an amount and started persuading their security to play the game as Benn shouted Paper, Scissors, Rock.” But even after hyping them up, the security denied participation and that amped up both of the boxers to have a competition amongst ourselves.

The competition ended in a friendly scuffle with both of them, pretending to hit each other before bidding their goodbyes. But even this harmless video has resulted in fans trolling Benn all over because of his way of conducting the game.

Have an interesting take?

“Most Hated Man In UK” is he worthy of this title?

A fan wrote, “Who says “paper scissor rock,” focusing on Benn’s different way of saying the game. The conventional way of saying the game all over the world is ‘Rock, Paper, Scissors,’ and Benn was saying it differently and that became the center for the trolls.

Another fan wrote, “Paper scissors rock”….. that must be how the private school boys say it?” focusing on the privileged upbringing of the 28-year-old. Benn spent his early years in Mallorca, Spain, where his father sent him to a Christian catholic private school. Benn has opened up about how traumatic his schooling was and how it has scarred him for the rest of his life.

Another fan wrote, “Paper, scissor, rock, Oh dear Benn. Lucky he’s alright at boxing. 😂,” implying that if the 23-0 boxer was not good at boxing, he wouldn’t have been able to succeed and no one would know him.

Another visibly frustrated and angry fan towards Benn wrote, “Why do they need Security..??.. Del Boy is loved by everyone… and Benn no one cares about him.” He stated that these two boxers do not need security. Chisora can take care of himself against almost anyone and everyone loves him because of his gracious nature. On the other hand, he had the opposite opinion about Benn and stated that it is not a big deal that someone would target him specifically.

It looks like Benn’s attempts to clear his name and hype his return to the ring have not worked. As one fan wrote, “Benn becoming more and more embarrassing living off his dads name,” dismissing everything that the undefeated welterweight has achieved by himself.

For the past month, Conor Benn has been trying to revive his long-time rivalry with Chris Eubank Jr. This rivalry is not just about a win and title, but it has a legacy behind it. This three-decade-long family rivalry was born in 1990 when Chris Eubank Sr. and Nigel Benn had their first fight. That was one of the most intense and snarky rivalries that the boxing world has ever seen and gave us two greats of the sport. That is why there was legit hype for the Conor Benn and Chris Eubank Jr. fight in 2022. But after Benn failed the drug test, the hype died down, and it has not been the same since. Every time that these boxers have tried to revive this match, including the Riyadh stare-off, has been a sorry excuse for living on their father’s legacy in the eyes of the fans.
