On 14th September 2024, Edgar Berlanga impressed the whole world by going the distance against Canelo Alvarez. The duo faced each other at T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas for Canelo’s unified Super Middleweight title, and even though the Brooklyn native walked out empty-handed, his inspired performance made everyone hopeful of a brighter future. Jump to December, Dan Rafael reported that ‘The Chosen One’ is considering a return to the ring on March 8, 2025, in the headline slot of a Matchroom Boxing card. However, there is no news regarding the potential opponent.

On Saturday, Berlanga attended the Liam Paro-Richardson Hitchins event in San Juan Puerto Rico, where he made his big plans evident for 2025. However, the big return plans fell flat on fans’ ears as they slammed the 27-year-old for looking bulky.

“You got Jamie Munguia. You got b*****ss Caleb Plant. You got (Jermall)Charlo,” stated Berlanga, further igniting his rivalry with Caleb Plant. He then told fans to eagerly await his return next year as “There’s a lot of big fights to make out there in 2025.”

Edgar Berlanga has been in an intense rivalry with the interim WBA super middleweight champion Caleb Plant for a while now. The rivalry started during the Canelo-Berlanga fight week when both threw vicious verbal jabs at each other during the press conference. Last week the rivalry reached a boiling point when ‘The Chosen One posted a screenshot of his private chat with Plant, revealing some frightening messages he sent to Plant.

In response, two weeks ago, Caleb Plant taunted Edgar Berlanga by posting a fan edit depicting a simulation of their fight, and obviously, the Brooklyn native was knocked out. So, it was obvious for Berlanga to reply in a way he found fitting. However, the call-out fell on deaf ears as fans decided to fixate on his weight gain.

If Fat Shaming Were an Art Form…

One user wrote, “Someone eating to much rice and beans 😂,” implying that Berlanga has not been following his diet since his last fight. Another user who felt the same wrote, “My boy needs to lay off the food 🥘,” stating that if Berlanga wants to fight in March, he should quit eating and watch his weight. Otherwise, there is no way that he can make a successful return in this state.

Another user mocked Edgar Berlanga and wrote, “My guy gonna be fighting at heavyweight his next fight.” He remarked that if Berlanga gains weight at the same rate, he will have to change his weight division. The Puerto Rican must get back to his training soon so that he can maintain his weight at 168 lbs efficiently.

Another fan was surprised by this sudden transformation and remarked, “Damn he gained weight fast.” The fan pointed out that Edgar Berlanga, who faced Canelo Alvarez just two months ago, gaining such a significant amount of weight in such a short time could be both unhealthy and concerning.

Amidst the sea of criticism, one fan reflected on his fight announcement. They wrote, “Is the ONLY fight we wanna see Berlanga & Plant! 🔥🔥,” making their excitement evident. Plant vs. Berlanga is a much-awaited contest that fans want to see because of the contrasting styles and heated rivalry both these boxers have.

Boxers gaining weight during their off time is not a rare phenomenon. Due to changes in diet and training, boxers like Edgar Berlanga, who engage in intense weight management, can relapse. Furthermore, the 27-year-old has acknowledged his desire to move up to 175 because of his natural weight. However, hopefully, he will be back to his old self once he starts training again.
