On Saturday, Diego Pacheco survived a late scare against Steven Nelson to retain his #1 WBO super middleweight ranking. As the fight got over, Edgar Berlanga wasted no time in calling out his Matchroom Boxing stablemate, promising the latter a bigger payday in a slightly condescending post. Pacheco knows that the fight against Canelo Alvarez is still quite far away from his reach. So, after the fight, the 23-year-old expressed his desire to fight against the top 5 contenders in the Super middleweight division, including Berlanga.
Matchroom head honcho Eddie Hearn excited by the idea of his two stars fighting each other expressed his willingness to make the fight. However, the promoter is skeptical and doesn’t believe that Berlanga is serious about the fight entirely. Something which fans also noticed as they ran down the 22-1 boxer over the insult on Pacheco and called out his selling capability.

After Pacheco’s victory, the Brooklyn native took to his ‘X’ and called him out. He wrote, “Ima get that young boy a big pay day and a big a** whooping 😂🤜🏼🤛🏼 you only getting paid 200k a fight sheesh 😂😂😂😂😂.” According to the 27-year-old, a fight against him would be Pacheco’s highest payday ever.

The callout got a reaction from the #1 WBO super middleweight and Hearn as well. In the post-match press conference at The Cosmopolitan, Diego Pacheco claimed that he has “been open to making it(Berlanga fight) for a long time now.” He further revealed that his coach Jose Benavidez Sr. warned him that anything less than a KO victory would perceive him as an easy target to other contenders and “all these guys are gonna be ready to fight you.” Pacheco definitely saw the irony in seeing things unfold exactly as his coach told him. However, he won’t shy away from the challenge no matter what.
Evidently, this is the Canelo Alvarez effect. Even since Berlanga has fought against the unified super middleweight champion, his stocks have risen a bit. He is more confident now in his selling ability and believes that he is a big draw. However, fans were quick to give him a reality check as they belittled the Brooklyn native over his callout to Pacheco.
Fans burst Edgar Berlanga’s bubble
Fans were quick to tell Berlanga that his last fight only sold out because of Canelo Alvarez. Without him, he won’t be as big of a draw as he thinks he is. One user, echoing this thought, wrote, “You ain’t a draw buddy. Canelo got you paid 😂😂,” claiming that he can’t promise anyone a big payday when he himself got one because of Canelo.
Several more fans attacked ‘The Takeover’ and claimed that he can’t guarantee Diego Pacheco a big payday given his resume so far. One user wrote, “U made more then 200k once because of canelo stop it u cant sell bumlanga 😂.” Another fan joined him instantly and wrote, “You got 1 big payday and that was cuz canelo Before that you were making 100k a fight,” claiming that Berlanga was earning even less than Pacheco before the Canelo fight.

A fan wrote, “You still celebrating after Canelo spanked yo for 12 rounds,” claiming that Berlanga should not flex so much over a lost fight. Another fan trolled the Brooklyn native over the loss and wrote, “You ain’t that guy !! You lost to canelo and didn’t even look good doing it, so please stop with the I lost world tour!”
Edgar Berlanga faced Canelo Alvarez on September 14 last year. Despite showing a bit of hope, he suffered his first career loss via unanimous decision and was even knocked down in the third round.
While everyone was mocking Berlanga over the payday promises, one fan was even critical of his choices. He wrote, “Naw get at @SweetHandsPlant and stop ducking that fight,” suggesting the Brooklyn native get a fight against Caleb Plant. Berlanga and Plant have been involved in a bitter rivalry for months now. It all started during the Alvarez vs. Munguia event last year where the duo got into a scuffle outside the arena. The two have been at each other’s throats on social media ever since. However, the fight is still too far away from being made.
