Will Edgar Berlanga's power be too much for Jaime Munguia in their upcoming brutal clash?

September 15th saw the rise in stocks of Edgar Berlanga exponentially. Not only did he exceed every expectation when he went toe-to-toe with the unified super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez, but he also set up various match-ups after taking the face of boxing the full twelve-round distance. According to Eddie Hearn, Berlanga’s future is bright and he will be “a major player in the division,” and the super middleweight title belongs to him.

There are already so many dream matchups being tossed around for Berlanga. Leonard Ellerbe, given their animosity for each other, teased a possible Caleb Plant matchup right after the main event ended in Las Vegas. And now, another dream match is being tossed around by former American boxer and DAZN commentator Sergio Mora.

‘The Chosen One’ was supposed to be another win for Alvarez. But the way the 27-year-old fought surprised everyone including coming back stronger from a 3rd-round knockdown. Mora was one of those critics who was not rating Berlanga highly ahead of the clash. But the fight changed his perspective as he wrote, “For all the critics and haters that were talking sh*t about this event, all I can say is that 20,000+ fans (most of them Mexican) are leaving here satisfied…including this “Pocho” Mexican. 🇲🇽🥊 #CaneloBerlanga.”

A fan replied to the post, asking Mora to compare the punching power of Berlanga and Jaime Munguía, Canelo’s previous opponent. “Who punches harder Berlanga or Jaime”? asked the fan excitedly. The former WBC light middleweight champion wasted no time to acknowledge the message by the fan and replied, “Berlanga. He rehydrates bigger, too. That fight would be violent! 💥🥊,” indicating an exciting matchup between the two.

Both these boxers are above 6 feet and have a similar reach and an aggressive fighting style. Munguia and Berlanga have won a major percentage of their matches via knockout and this match has all the potential to be a deranged outing. Meanwhile, Jaime Munguia himself had praised Berlanga and considered him a worthy challenger to Canelo.

Jaime Munguia acknowledged Berlanga’s chances

Ahead of the headline fight against Canelo, Munguia was one of the few people who gave props to Berlanga. The Tijuana-born boxer accepted the fact that Canelo was the favorite, but he also gave Berlanga a fair chance. “I think it’s a good fight. I know a lot of people are picking against Berlanga. He’s a good fighter with a steady jab. If he can properly use it and manage the distance right, he could win,” said the boxer while predicting the result of the fight.
