Is Edgar Berlanga the next big thing in boxing, or just another hype train waiting to derail?

You know you are watching a special talent when you realize that a boxer didn’t have to turn to his corner and seek instructions because he got his job done within the first round. And Edgar Berlanga did it every time in his first 16 pro fights. So, you should glue your eyes to the screen when ‘The Chosen One’ takes center stage against Canelo Alvarez on September 14. If you blink, you might miss his heavy-handed punches that have floored his opponents previously. He has annihilated every opponent who stood in his way and he did it in style.

The Brooklyn native had showcased the markings of a champion early in his career and it won’t be long before he realizes that. But before that happens, let’s have a look at his top 5 knockouts, which blew away the fans and spectators and added to his case of a future champion.

Edgar Berlanga put relentless pressure on and kept on as he tried to catch Barbosa lacking with a left-right one-two combination. When a big right hand connected, he chased Barbosa around the ring and to one of the corners. The brutal punches continued to wreak havoc as Barbosa tried desperately to get away. But after an uppercut from the then-21-year-old, he found himself on the ropes.

Berlanga persisted with his piercing left hook-right cross combination, and after another right to the chin of a cowering Barbosa, the referee stepped in to stop the fight just 45 seconds into the first round. Although Barbosa was still on his feet, his guard failed him against the never-ending onslaught by Edgar Berlanga.

#4 Cesar Nunez, 2019: TKO in 1 (8)

The first-round dismantle job continued for two more fights, and then Edgar Berlanga booked a date with Nunez. But it was a Berlanga show from the get-go, and Nunez tried to target Berlanga’s body to force him to close fighting. The plan failed miserably, as a counter-left hook from Berlanga floored Nunez in the first 15 seconds of the match, thereby shattering Nunez’s confidence.

The punishment continued with another knockdown at the 97-second mark that left Nunez on wobbly legs. Towards the last 30 seconds of the first round, Edgar Berlanga landed a four-punch combination with much resistance from the Spanish fighter. Berlanga then built on it and threw a right at a low angle, and then caught Nunez with a left uppercut. As Nunez tried to dance around the ring, a heavy left hook to the side of Nunez’s body tumbled him, which he only doubled up with a right hook to the head, dropping Nunez on his back and winning the fight with another sweeping display.

#3 Ulises Sierra, 2020: KO in 1 (8)

It was a crisp action affair, where Berlanga patiently worked the jab initially in the fight and used them to set up bigger punches. It didn’t take him long to employ his dangerous left hook on Sierra’s body, which quickly broke the Puerto Rican boxer’s body. He then mixed those with a one-two combination, as he exhibits great ring generalship by chasing him around and never allowing Serra enough space to evade his punches.

But Edgar Berlanga also showed ruthlessness in his approach, as he continued to tag Sierra with three consequent sweeping right hooks to the head with power until he went down. While Sierra was back on his feet by the 9th count, it was obvious the match would not go beyond the first round. He crumbled towards the end of the first round as he found himself on the ropes and helpless against the powerful attacks. A three-punch combination with a left hook to the head once again dropped him on his knees and the referee was quick to call off the action.

#2 Lanell Bellows, 2020: TKO in 1 (8)

Bellows had never been stopped before. But his face told the story in the first minute of the fight, as the fans could see a patch of hot red liquid around his left eye socket. Then it happened in a flash and with a flurry of punches. Berlanga’s punches had already put Bellows in a disoriented zone, where his punches failed to reach his competitor’s body. Whereas Berlanga’s blows did substantial damage.

A left hook rocked Bellows and the only thing he could do later on the ropes was face the brunt of devastating punches until the referee rescued him. He ate up another sweeping left hook as he was about to trip over and the referee immediately jumped in to stop the action.
