Is Oscar De La Hoya really robbing fighters, or is Berlanga just stirring the pot?

As the boxing world is in the middle of a lawsuit former undisputed lightweight champion Devin Haney filed against former interim WBC lightweight champion Ryan Garcia and his promoter Golden Boy Promotions, Edgar Berlanga has accused GB Promotions head Oscar De La Hoya of stealing from fighters.

Last month, ‘The Dream’ sued the Victorville native, seeking damages for battery, fraud, and breach of contract in connection with Garcia’s doping violation after their April fight in Brooklyn, New York. Haney’s suit also mentioned Oscar De La Hoya’s GB Promotions, seeking a full accounting of the event that includes evidence to support expenses.

Garcia responded to the lawsuit on social media, noting, “I’m being sued for doing my job. This fight has been a Netflix documentary but this right here is the finale. Your honor, he simply struggles with left hook syndrome.” However, for a while, Oscar or his promotion had not shared an official statement on the matter.

That changed yesterday when ‘Golden Boy’ took to X, to highlight, “Every fighter who has worked with Golden Boy has always been paid exactly what they are owed and given all documents they were entitled to.” De La Hoya further denied any allegations against him for failing to pay the fighters in the fights organized by him, while also offering to help Haneys understand their contract better.

Since this statement from the retired world champion, Edgar Berlanga has jumped headfirst into the conversation. Responding to De La Hoya’s post, ‘The Chosen One’ wrote, “You robbing fighters that’s why they are trying to get away from you brother. You are no good man.” However, this isn’t the first time De La Hoya and Berlanga have butted heads.

Is Oscar De La Hoya really robbing fighters, or is Berlanga just stirring the pot?

Have an interesting take?

Just last month, Edgar Berlanga came to the sharp realization that Canelo Alvarez was levels above him when the Mexican superstar defeated him via a unanimous decision in a one-sided affair. However, before the fight went down in Las Vegas, the loudmouth fighter had lashed out at Oscar De La Hoya.

During his pre-fight press conference, frustrated by De La Hoya demeaning the biggest fight of his career and his decision to attend UFC 306 instead of the boxing match, Berlanga made his feelings clear. “I want to say something, too: f**k Oscar De La Hoya too. That motherf***er… he keeps talking and talking. We’re gonna smack him when we see him.”

‘The Chosen One’ is currently signed to Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing and believes De La Hoya’s disdain against his bout comes from not being able to sign him after his departure from Top Rank in January 2023. Not to mention, Oscar De La Hoya has also been at odds with his former charge, Canelo Alvarez, which caused Oscar’s reaction in the first place.

That said, it appears that Oscar De La Hoya is making enemies with fighters left and right. Whether this will harm his standing in the boxing world is yet to be seen, as the GB Promotions head grapples with Haney’s lawsuit. Do you think Oscar robbed any fighters?
