Shakur Stevenson joining Matchroom Boxing—brilliant move or career suicide?

Shakur Stevenson finally has a stable. After leaving Top Rank and mulling over his future for months, the WBC lightweight champion has picked Eddie Hearn‘s Matchroom Boxing as he tries to go through a career revamp. However, the fans discuss and deliberate the call, as it carries implications in the lightweight division.

Stevenson, 27, relieved himself of Bob Arum‘s contract when he fought Artem Harutyunyan and picked up another snooze fest win. Soon after, his praise for Hearn, 45, seized headlines as the fans continued speculating about his next stop. After all, despite his recent lackluster fights, the 22-0 record holder remains one of the top talents at 135. With rumors of a fight with Joe Cordina spreading on the internet, it was a foregone conclusion that he would join the British promoter, with the announcement coming on Thursday.

TalkSports’ Michael Benson turned to his X handle and shared the update about the WBC lightweight champion joining Matchroom Boxing. He wrote, “ANNOUNCED: Shakur Stevenson has signed a promotional deal with Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom ahead of his fight vs Joe Cordina on Oct 12th.” But the duration of the contract hasn’t been specified for the public or the fans.

“I am delighted to welcome what I believe is a pound-for-pound great to the Matchroom team,” Hearn announced. More details will be out soon, as the fight gets closer. However, the fans are split over how they see the newly announced partnership.

A user wondered whether it would allow Stevenson to make fights that fans want to see. William Zepeda and Gerovonta Davis are the two names that have attracted attention for a typical technician vs. puncher showdown with the Newark native. But now all three are in different promotions. They commented, “Now let’s see if team Shakur & new promoter will be willing to make the fights fans want…fights with guys like Tank & Zepeda seems to be slipping further away‼️”

Someone referenced Stevenson’s desire to fight the biggest names in boxing. But that was not happening. So, they hoped it would allow the lightweight champion to do so. They expressed, “Huge signing time to show the world what he’s been saying now.”

A comment speculated that Hearn would drop Stevenson after one fight after going the distance for one more fight, throwing fewer punches, and fighting on the backfoot. Stevenson has received flak for his recent performances for not putting on a show and only grinding out a decision win. The comment read, “Eddie will drop him after one fight and he realises how boring shakur is.”

Lastly, a fan theorized that ‘Tank’ would use Stevenson joining Matchroom as an excuse to turn down a fight with him. With Davis, 29, fighting for the PBC, it could be easier to put off the fight. They contemplated and noted, “Tank gon use this as the excuse to not fight Shakur now 😭😭😭.”
