Canelo Alvarez is no stranger to landing knockout blows. This week, however, his targets weren’t opponents in the ring, but his former promoter, Golden Boy Promotions’ Oscar De La Hoya. Alvarez, while promoting his upcoming fight with Jaime Munguia, took aim at Golden Boy’s tumultuous relationship with fighters. For the uninitiated, Canelo and Oscar had a falling out of epic proportion which ultimately resulted in a lawsuit. In the lawsuit against his promoter and broadcaster DAZN, Canelo alleged a breach of contract and demanded a staggering $280 million in damages.

This lawsuit threw a wrench into what was supposed to be a lucrative partnership. Six years ago, Canelo and DAZN signed a deal touted as the richest in boxing history: $365 million for Canelo’s next 11 fights. However, disagreements over opponents and payouts had turned this dream deal into a bitter dispute. Canelo wanted what he signed for – guaranteed pay and control over his opponents. So things fell apart between the two and the bad blood remained. Now in an interview, Eddie Hearn shed light on their relationship as well.

Boxing matchmaker Eddie Hearn has weighed in on the simmering feud between superstar Canelo Alvarez and his former promoter, Oscar De La Hoya. When asked about the possibility of a reconciliation, Hearn offered a nuanced perspective, hinting at deeper issues. “No, never,” Hearn declared, shutting down any notion of repairing the permanently fractured business relationship.

He acknowledged the personal nature of the rift, suggesting there’s more to it than just business disagreements. Further, Hearn stated, “The way I know Canelo Alvarez, I don’t really see him having grudges against people,” he stated. Does Hearn believe the cause might lie with De La Hoya’s actions? Well, he has again left this question to the realm of speculation.

Ultimately, Hearn paints a picture of a closed door. “He will not entertain any conversation about Oscar De La Hoya,” Hearn stated definitively. Still, despite their differences, it seems Oscar De La Hoya holds the key to David Benavidez’s potential fight with Alvarez, at least according to him.

Can Oscar De La Hoya pull the strings?

Canelo Alvarez seems determined to dodge David Benavidez’s challenge, but one thing is for sure: you can never say never in boxing!. Oscar De La Hoya, Canelo’s former promoter claims to hold  the key to this potential super middleweight showdown.

He’s a master promoter, well aware of the levers that control the Mexican boxing scene. “If David Benavidez was with me at Golden Boy, it would have been a different story by now. We would have already beaten the drums, I would have taken David to Mexico with me and challenged Canelo, knocked on everyone’s door,” De La Hoya declared, promising a bright future for Benavidez if the latter’s career was in his control.

The implication is clear – with De La Hoya in his corner, Benavidez’s dream fight with Alvarez would be inevitable. Or is it a ploy to boost his own image and financial fortunes by signing the ‘Mexian Monster? What are your thoughts about this? Tell us in the comments section.
