Following his recent loss to Canelo Alvarez, Jermell Charlo announced that the experience was “amazing“. Although he was outboxed, Charlo said he was “proud of myself” since he believed he did “an awesome job” in the ring. As per his statements, the boxing world must laud Jermell Charlo since the American boxer faced “one of the best guys in boxing” right after recovering from “a hand injury“.

Despite the loss to Alvarez, Charlo called himself the best fighter in the world and assured his fans he wouldn’t leave. While Charlo thought he did a fairly good job against the Mexican phenom that Canelo is, a number of fans criticized the 33-year-old over his latest performance. In a recent interview with Fight Hub TV, promoter Eddie Hearn expressed his opinion about Alvarez vs. Charlo. Here is what he said.

Eddie Hearn remains brutally honest about a laid-back performance by Jermell Charlo

Although Canelo lived up to Eddie Hearn’s expectations, Jermell Charlo, who failed to deliver a lion’s performance, entirely disappointed him. “I thought he [Canelo Alvarez] looked good. I knew he would come back with a little bit more vengeance,” said Hearn. However, speaking about Charlo, Hearn wondered if the American boxer fought relaxed because he had probably made enough money. “I don’t know, you’re getting paid too much money? Have you got too much money? Because the special ones that got too much money still stick it on the line – Canelo, AJ,” added Hearn.

According to Hearn, Charlo played safe because he probably prioritized money over boxing. “But it almost looked like Charlo was like, I don’t know what he got $8 million, $10 million. It’s almost like, ‘Let’s not hurt each other in here tonight; I’m just going to get our money’,” stated Hearn. With these statements, Hearn made a juxtaposition between Charlo and other fighters who would care about their legacy.

Hearn calls Charlo’s fight “awful”

According to Hearn, Charlo seemed unbothered about his legacy. In his opinion, those who stick everything on the line would rather get KO’ed than lose on points inside the ring. “It’s like all the talk about legacy, sticking on the line. A lot of fighters go, ‘I’d rather get knocked out, carried out than lose on points’,” declared the Chairman of Matchroom. “But actually, how many fight like that? So, [it was a] really disappointing fight. Awful,” he concluded.
