Canelo Alvarez vs. Jaime Munguia Reports Makes Fans Question Mexican Icon’s Legacy: ”Ducknelo Duckvarez”

The boxing world finally has the answer to what they have been asking for months at this point. Who will Canelo Alvarez fight next? Will it be Jermall Charlo, the smart choice? Or will Canelo silence his critics by fighting David Benavidez? Well, the answer is none of those guys. Instead, according to a recent report from ESPN’s Salvador Rodrigues, Jaime Munguia is the lucky one.

The update comes within hours of Canelo Alvarez splitting ways with the Premier Boxing Championship. Reportedly, they had a three-fight deal in place, but they separated due to a disagreement regarding arranging a fight with Jermall Charlo. However, when the boxing world came across the news on social media yesterday, they weren’t happy.

Where and when Canelo Alvarez would fight Munguia?

After Rodrigues broke the news, Michael Benson from talkSport quickly picked up the story. Turning to X (formerly Twitter), Benson wrote, “Canelo Alvarez has reportedly now decided to fight Jaime Munguia next on May 4th in Las Vegas.” There hasn’t been an official word from Canelo’s corner as of yet.

However, Munguia expressed his desire to fight Canelo in the Cinco De Mayo event after he defeated common opponent Jhon Ryder. Plus, an all-Mexcian fight on Cinco De Mayo makes a lot of sense, as it has the potential of raking in millions in revenue. Despite all that, many fans weren’t satisfied with Canelo’s decision.

A fight against Jaime Munguia fails to impress the populace

Not long ago, the undisputed Mexican boxing legend had claimed he would fight an American boxer on May 4. So, when he could not keep his word, waves of angry fans took every opportunity to criticize him. And the tweet from Benson was no different. One user decided to give Canelo a new nickname, befitting his actions lately.

The next user echoed a similar sentiment but had a lot more to say. The user clarified that if Canelo doesn’t fight David Benavidez, then nobody is interested in the fight. To take another dig, the user even left some emojis of ducks. 

Someone else claimed Canelo chose a Mexican opponent but purposefully avoided the one that could defeat him. It’s worth remembering that, as per Canelo’s statement, he was supposed to fight an American, so contradiction seems to have become Canelo’s identity.

The next user was even more harsh with their take on the news. The user claimed that it doesn’t matter who Canelo Alvarez fights now. If he doesn’t fight Benavidez before retiring, he will be remembered as a professional duckker.

One user openly expressed their discontent with Canelo, claiming they would not support Canelo’s fight because of his decision to avoid Benavidez at any cost. 

Despite fighting numerous formidable foes during the span of his decorated career, Canelo’s later years in the sport seem to have been marred with ducking allegations. Whether he is worried about losing to Benavidez or is just building more tension before fighting him is uncertain. However, Canelo’s choice of opponent has failed to satisfy the boxing world.
